The Secret of Blackjack Woods

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on May 31st, 2014

I don’t often read fiction, but occasionally a book comes across my path that beckons me to put aside scholarly texts and enjoy a good story. Case in point, The Secret of Blackjack Woods, the debut novel by Ashlen Brown. I recently met the Texas-based author at a cryptozoology event where I picked up a copy. Having no prior knowledge of her book, I was initially drawn in by its mysterious title and cover – which seems to hint at a Bigfoot story – and after a brief conversation with Brown I learned that indeed the impetus for her novel had come from an incident in which her mother and sister sighted a mysterious creature near their family home in Texas. This led to speculation that it could have been a Bigfoot which later inspired Brown to write her heart-felt and downright exciting novel.

West Virginia’s “Mountain Monsters”

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 31st, 2014

Summer nights we sat by a crackling fire alongside the creek waiting for a fish to take our bait. Then suddenly a loud splash followed by a strange sound moved over the darkened water. We told ourselves it was a fish or some woodland creature hidden in the night, to assure ourselves we were safe.

Another time while hunting raccoons in the dense dark woods, we waited for the dogs to pick up the scent of their prey. A tree’s branch rustled overhead and a heavy musk smell filled the night air; again we told ourselves we knew what waited beyond our lights in the darkness. Afraid of the deep woods or dark, no, but we sometimes wondered what hid in the deep woods of the western Appalachian Mountains.

Meldrum on Killer Russian Yeti

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 30th, 2014

Ever hear about a mass murder and think, huh, I wonder if a yeti did it? Okay, probably not your first conclusion. Or second. Or fifty-fifth. But that was the one explorer Mike Libecki found himself drawn to in investigating the cold case of the Dyatlov Incident, a journey documented in “Russian Yeti: The Killer Lives” (a two-hour special premiering on Discovery Sun. June 1 at 9:00 p.m.). Crazy, right? Well, hold on a minute.

The Unethical and Potential Dangers of Bigfoot Baiting

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 29th, 2014

Every year hundreds of enthusiastic researchers head to the woods, gear in tow, carrying cameras, tents, and various baiting strategies. They enter the woods with one goal in mind: that of finding Bigfoot. The goal of discovery in and of itself is a self-sacrificing cause, often costing the researcher time and money. What drives some of these men and women to do what they do? For some it is the possibility of a new species being discovered, studied, cataloged, and written about. For others, it is to find answers to their own personal experiences.
