The Barbaric Beast of Boggy Creek

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on June 16th, 2014

As everyone knows, I’m a total Boggy Creek geek. My collection includes many vintage items related to the various Boggy Creek movies, and now, thanks to my good friend Cliff Barackman, I’m the owner of the “juvenile creature” mask from Boggy Creek II (1985).

The Secret of Blackjack Woods

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on May 31st, 2014

I don’t often read fiction, but occasionally a book comes across my path that beckons me to put aside scholarly texts and enjoy a good story. Case in point, The Secret of Blackjack Woods, the debut novel by Ashlen Brown. I recently met the Texas-based author at a cryptozoology event where I picked up a copy. Having no prior knowledge of her book, I was initially drawn in by its mysterious title and cover – which seems to hint at a Bigfoot story – and after a brief conversation with Brown I learned that indeed the impetus for her novel had come from an incident in which her mother and sister sighted a mysterious creature near their family home in Texas. This led to speculation that it could have been a Bigfoot which later inspired Brown to write her heart-felt and downright exciting novel.

Legend of Boggy Creek Collectible Figure

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on March 20th, 2014

As most know, I’m a huge fan of The Legend of Boggy Creek. I’ve written a book on the subject, collected relics from the film and Fouke area, and lectured about Fouke Monster history at events across the country. So when I came across the opportunity to make The Legend of Boggy Creek movie poster come to life, so to speak, I jumped at the chance.

Happy Holidays everyone! Cryptozoo News / Loren Coleman has posted his list of Top Ten Cryptozoology Books of the Year. I’m honored to have landed the #1 spot with my new book Lizard Man. I must thank Anomalist Books for their commitment to publish excellent cryptozoology titles, including Karl Shuker’s Mirabilis which was chosen as #4. Congratulations to my other colleagues and fellow Cryptomundo contributors that also made the list. 2013 was a year of great books, all deserving of praise. Here’s a few of the highlights…

Troodon and the Dinosauroid Hypothesis

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on December 23rd, 2013

In a chapter entitled “Possibilities” from my new book, Lizard Man, I discuss various theories which have been proposed to explain sightings of reptilian-humanoid type cryptids. One of these theories is based on the concept of a “Hypothetical Dinosauroid,” which is a conjectured evolutionary path conceived by D.A. Russell and R. Séguin and published in 1982 in the National Museum of Canada’s Syllogeous No. 37. In the paper, Russell and Séguin essentially hypothesize that if the brain of this dinosaur had continued to grow in proportion to its body, then evolutionary changes would have been necessary to accommodate the new cranial mass. One of these changes would have been a more upright stance, since the “tendency to position the head more directly over the vertebral column is seen in anthropoids of increasing brain size.” This would conceivably lead to more anthropomorphic legs, longer arms, and most dramatically, a human-like head. It’s an interesting concept, and one that I discuss further in my book (as it relates to cryptozoology).

Along these lines, I came across this interesting video which provides additional information and visuals in regard to the concept of the Dinosauroid and reptilian humanoids in general:

Dead Bigfoot: A True Story Reviewed

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on December 23rd, 2013

If you follow bigfoot research, you’ve no doubt heard the controversial name of Justin Smeja. Smeja is, of course, the bear hunter who claims to have shot and killed a juvenile sasquatch in the Sierra mountains in 2010. Since coming forward, his story has been widely spread on the internet (through both interviews and a small documentary), and lately featured in several television shows including Bigfoot: The New Evidence. The DNA evidence has been analyzed, but still the question remains: did Smeja actually kill a bigfoot?

These type of stories tend to polarize the bigfoot community as researchers struggle to sort out the truth. In an effort to do just that, bigfoot researcher and independent filmmaker, Ro Sahebi, in association with The Sierras Evidence Initiative, has created a new feature documentary titled Dead Bigfoot: A True Story. In the doc, Sahebi interviews the witnesses, initiates a polygraph test, and takes a look at the various shreds of evidence that have thus far been presented.
