Bigfoot is an Endangered Species?

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 4th, 2007

Bigfoot’s best buddy Todd Standing is back in the news again.

We reported here on Cryptomundo when Mr. Standing filed the petition to protect Bigfoot in Canada.

The following article states that a similar appeal had been made to the US congress.

This article, or other variations of it, is the only thing I have heard about a petition being filed with Congress.

I imagine that if that had been done, some of the major US media would have picked up on it.

‘Bigfoot is an endangered species’

Ottawa – Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species.

So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada’s species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees.

“The debate over their (Bigfoot’s) existence is moot in the circumstance of their tenuous hold on merely existing,” reads a petition presented by Lake to parliament in March and due to be discussed next week.

“Therefore, the petitioners request the House of Commons to establish immediate, comprehensive legislation to affect immediate protection of Bigfoot,” says the petition signed by almost 500 of Lake’s constituents in Edmonton, Alberta.

A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress.

Down through history, there have been numerous, if unsubstantiated sightings of Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch in North American folklore.

The beast is said to inhabit remote forests, mainly in the US Pacific northwest and western Canada, and many believe it could be related to the equally mythical Yeti said to have found its home in Tibet and Nepal.

While sometimes described as large, hairy bipedal hominoids, Bigfoot are considered by most experts to be a combination of folklore and hoaxes.

But the legend remains strong, and Bigfoot researcher Todd Standing, who was behind the petition, claims to have proof of its existence, and says he fears for its safety.

“When I get species protection for them nationwide, I will make my findings public and I will take this out of the realm of mythology. Bigfoot is real,” Standing told Global National television news.

He said he has 12 seconds of video footage of Bigfoot roaming Canada’s western Rocky Mountains included in a 30-minute documentary, but his detractors say it was staged with actors.

His supporters hail from Canada’s westernmost provinces, but Bigfoot sightings have been reported across the country, which is 90 percent uninhabited.

There are currently 516 plant and animal species at risk in Canada, according to Environment Canada. Another 13 species are already extinct. – Sapa-AFP

Considering the fact that this article stated that Standing’s, and Sylvanic’s, detractors say that his film was staged with actors, the following information is very interesting.

Cryptomundo reader partytildawn sent the following info to Cryptomundo regarding Todd Standing and Sylvanic.

I am fairly certain this movie was a fraud. I found an advertisement on the internet for cast of actors by Todd Standing about the same time this documentary was filmed.

I found this ad placed by Todd Standing in April 2005 on http://www.mediamag.ca/ …

Actors are invited to audition for a feature film to be shot in and around Edmonton in August. Seeking 9 male and 5 female actors 25 – 35 years old. For more info on the roles and for an audition appointment email or call Todd at (780) 232-52**.

It was located here. However, that page is no longer available, but Google has it archived and saved at this location. I am hoping this Google link works.

I am wondering if this is where he got his people to appear in his “documentary.” – partytildawn

I called the number listed on the google cached site today, but it was not answered by anyone named Todd, nor did they apparently have anything to do with a film audition.

So is Todd Standing a fraud?

Did he hire actors to play a part in the filming of Sylvanic?

Will we ever know the truth?

  1. BugMO responds:

    Who’s Todd Standing?

  2. elsanto responds:

Loren, I’m surprised that you missed the real news item, here. It’s not that bigfoot is an endangered species — it’s that Todd Standing is a “bigfoot researcher!”

  3. elsanto responds:

And kudos to partytildawn for the research. I’m guessing that Todd probably used the number for the casting call, then changed it.

  4. Craig Woolheater responds:

    BugMO,

Click on the link that is Todd Standing’s name at the top of the article above to read all that is Todd Standing and Sylvanic here on Cryptomundo.

  5. Craig Woolheater responds:

    elsanto,

Loren mentioned it the other day when he got blamed for something I, Craig Woolheater, posted here on Cryptomundo. Probably that Pterodactyl video that some were peeved that I posted.
Please note that Loren did not post this article, I did.

    Cryptomundo is NOT Loren Coleman.

Loren is one of four bloggers here on Cryptomundo, along with myself, John Kirk and Rick Noll.

  6. BugMO responds:

Thanks Craig, I only had to read the post were he calls himself the authority on Bigfoot and I could tell what kind of a person he is. The guy has got a big head if he thinks he is the authority on Bigfoot. In my opinion Loren Coleman, Ivan T. Sanderson, Grover Krantz, and a small handful of others are the real authority on Bigfoot, if anyone should be called that.

  7. captiannemo responds:

Todd Standing been given more coverage than a hoaxer should. He was just a guy with a camera and a cheap monkey suit. He is no expert, what serious research has he done? What books has he written? When will people see they are just wasting there time with this guy?

  8. Rillo777 responds:

Yes, let’s give credit where credit is due. Right below the title is a small note that says, “Posted by” followed in green by the poster’s name and date of posting.

Loren’s name may be the one we’re most familiar with due to his books and all, but the other researchers are excellent, too.

Just take a moment to look under the title before you click on it to see who posted it.

  9. bill green responds:

hey craig wow this is definetly a very interesting informative new bigfoot article indeedy. maybe sasquatch will be put on endangered species list now in great safe way either by congress or wild life organinzations. thanks bill 🙂

  10. shumway10973 responds:

It is kinda too bad that there’s possibility of fraud here. I would love to see big foot protected. Course I would also love to see unnecessary construction in the middle of pristine wilderness stopped. I remember one sighting, I think it was last year in Maryland, where they were building a shopping mall right up against swamp/wet lands. That is totally unnecessary, and not just for the environment, but this country has gone so crazy with shopping that they will build huge malls on top of swamp land. I’ve worked in 3 or 4 of these around the country and the malls are sinking into the unsettled ground. Here’s my point, the land can’t handle the strain, there are so many known animals without a home now and I for one know there are many more animals to be discovered, especially in the wooded or swampy areas. If Big Foot is living in a swamp, it’s because the number of people passing thru there is low. They like it that way.

  11. elsanto responds:

    Craig,

HUMBLEST apologies… I could have sworn it was Loren’s name on the post. I consider myself still wet from the noodle-whacking I just got.

    Kowtowing,

    -El

  12. Loren Coleman responds:

I privately noted to several people a few days ago that I thought this was another unfortunate publicity stunt by those involved to get more publicity for their probable dubious Bigfoot footage. I think this one is so transparent that I am shocked so many “news organizations” are even giving this one any attention at all.

  13. mystery_man responds:

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one thinking that, Loren. Even over here in Japan, it made it on page 3 of the paper and it was treated as a legitimate news article right next to what I felt were far more pressing news stories. If publicity is what Mr. Standing wants, it worked. Groan.

  14. MultipleEncounters responds:

Unfortunately there are many ‘Todd’s’ in Edmonton. Could be of Royalty tho. 🙂 Kind of like ‘Bob’ or ‘Dave’ is here in the States.

Sadly, if there is no record of the number belonging to him, it could just be coincidence.

What I do find concerning is that he peititions for protection, but he won’t even show the House of Commons his third video up front. He kind of has the cart before the horse in wanting protection before providing his alleged proof. And his first and second videos sure aren’t sufficient evidence. Does he not trust his own evidence to survive the critique of wildlife experts during review? I was also under the impression that he already had his third video, but had not released it. But then I see that he is planning his third video this year at another site? I’m confused.

If you read the first page of his ‘so called’ Peitition, it is also very ambiguous without any species classification or basic discussion thereof. I find it surprising that he uses the most adulterated slang name for the creature ‘bigfoot’, and has never once linked any early Canadian origination. This does not appear to be somebody who is of an academic or professional background if he is to leave out so much critical information about the species itself. Especially if he wanted to convince Canadian Parliament of their mere existence. As far as the US goes, a Canadian with his lack of credentials he’s displayed, filing any such documents with so little substance, could turn everyone’s research into a big joke. His is not the conduct of a professional concerned about a species, but instead someone looking for attention and to display his effrontery tactics. Besides, here in the US he has no Standing! 😉 LOL

  15. mystery_man responds:

I think it would definitely behoove him to show this video and make it known if in fact it happens to be genuine. Wouldn’t that bolster his case for it being a real animal and in need of protection? Are we supposed to just take his word for it? It seems a bit backward to ask for species protection, THEN make one’s findings known. That isn’t the way it works. He should release everything he has, let it be held to scientific scrutiny, and then let everyone decide whether it is a genuine animal that needs saving.

I admire the idea behind protecting Bigfoot, but let’s be realistic here. I don’t think it’s as easy as waving a hand and suddenly Bigfoot is protected. Is anyone really surprised that legislators would be hesitant to enact laws to protect a creature that is not documented by science and is widely seen by the public as a myth? No matter what those at this site think, that is the way it is perceived, so if Mr. Standing has this claimed undeniable video proof, I suggest he come out with it if he hopes to achieve his goals. I personally think the way this has been handled smacks of a publicity stunt and not of a person who has a genuine interest in the well being of this creature.

  16. shadowparks responds:

If no one has ever came up with a body of bigfoot, then why protect it? It seems to be doing a good job on its own.
