Big foot causes big mystery in Lakveille

Boys find five-toed foot while exploring in the woods; police send it to examiner

LAKEVILLE (MA) — Call it the case of the elusive big foot.

Authorities are trying to determine what two young boys found when they were exploring in the woods of Lakeville.

On March 29, Sgt. Steven Leanues picked up what appears to be a decomposed foot that the boys found in the woods off Pantheon Road.

Police Chief Frank Alvilhiera sent it to the medical examiner, who determined it is not human, although it appears to have five toes.

But what is it?

Alvilhiera said it might be a bear paw or perhaps it belonged to a different animal, although it appears to be human.

Until the medical examiner does further testing, its identity remains uncertain.

“It will take some time before we hear any official results,” Alvilhiera said.

In other words, big foot remains a mystery.

Cryptomundian and resident skeptic Ben Radford say:

Tests are still being conducted, but the strange find has locals asking: What has five toes and looks like a foot — but isn’t? Maybe Bigfoot, but more likely a bear. Strange as it may seem, this is not the first time that animal bones have been mistaken for human remains.Ben Radford

Eerily similar to “The Hand of Unknown Origin“, me thinks…

    Very interesting find.

Although it may turn out to be a bear (most likely), It nevertheless should remind us that physical evidence beyond DNA is what is needed to discover Sasquatch or any land based cryptid.

One interesting interesting fact to note when comparing Bear to both human feet and Sasquatch tracks: the Bear’s big toe is where out little toes are, and vice versa. If you find what looks like a series of Sasquatch tracks (i.e. hind feet) in the woods and find that the big toe is on the outer edge of the foot, not closer to the inner side like in humans and Sasquatch, you have a bear that is probably walking upright.

If they can determine which side this foot’s big toe was one, and this foot does not face in the fashion of bears (with an outer big toe), and combine this with the fact that the authorities say this is not a human being, then the conclusions is out of this world.

  2. RandyS responds:

I say bear. It looks like somebody cut off the claws.

There’s a sameness to the thickness of all of the bones — which you see repeated here in this photo of a skeletal bear’s foot:

But if you look at the bones of a human foot, there’s a vast difference in the thickness of the bones from the big toe to the little tow (as seen here).

  3. Redrose999 responds:

I’d say bear myself. Minus claws, it has a similar structure to the bear foot posted.

Can someone post a picture of a ape or chimp foot?

Isn’t that debatable in view of Denesova? I see it the other way and a reminder of how DNA is needed in addition to anything else like a few bits of fossil or bone-or instead of in some cases if thats all thats available. Like bigfoot there are no other recognized bones or fossils. I reckon there should be thousands! I expect whatever the Lakeville foot is the medical examiner would find it hughly dificult to say it was of a bigfoot, not that is very likely.

Without the DNA the Denesova bones would have been written off as possibly -maybe unimportant bits of neanderthal.

Interesting your information about bears feet have the largest bones on the outside, I doubt I am the first to come up with the idea but could explain stories of certain mystery animals walking backwoods.

  5. mandors responds:

There doesn’t seem to be a break in the pinky metatarsal. I question whether it’s bone, foot or otherwise. I’ll go out on a limb and guess root or mushroom.

Not the first, norman-uk, but solid critical thinking on your part, nonetheless.

  7. cryptokellie responds:

Well the article states that the mystery member was sent to the medical examiner who declared that the remains were not human. I’m going to out on a limb (no pun intended?) and say that most likely the medical examiner would know whether the artifact was plant, animal or mineral.

Indeed if it were plant or fungal material, the examiner would have stated that fact and ended the mystery right then and there.

My take…bear foot minus the claws. No size reference is given so a raccoon is also a possibility.
