Your Pick for Best and Worst Bigfoot Movie

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on June 23rd, 2006

With all of the talk here on Cryptomundo about Bigfoot movies, the good, bad and the ugly, I thought that I would give the readers of Cryptomundo the opportunity to weigh in with their picks.

I still pick The Legend of Boggy Creek as my favorite. Not for the great cinematic effort that it wasn’t, but for the profound effect that it had on me as a child growing up. It was a major influence on me and my interest in Bigfoot.

I also still pick Bob Gray’s Bigfoot as the worst. The plot was bad, the acting was horrible. And it has nothing to do with him as a person.

About Craig Woolheater

I have appeared in or contributed to the following TV programs, documentaries and films: OLN's Mysterious Encounters: "Caddo Critter", Southern Fried Bigfoot, Travel Channel's Weird Travels: "Bigfoot", History Channel's MonsterQuest: "Swamp Stalker", The Wild Man of the Navidad, Destination America's Monsters and Mysteries in America: Texas Terror - Lake Worth Monster, Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot: Return to Boggy Creek and Beast of the Bayou.

The answer to that one depends on whether you want to LYAO or be scared silly.

For the Laugh Your A– Off, I would vote for “Harry and the Hendersons” as first place. The runner-up would be “They Call Him Sasquatch” as the definitely “B” movie spoof of a BFRO expedition (thought that wasn’t what the producers intended — I’m sure).

For the scare genre, I’d have to select the now ancient, but nostalgically cool “The Legend of Boggy Creek” to take first place. The film took liberties with the facts that “A True Story” promised, but that’s Tinsel Town for you.

The more current “Sasquatch”, while having its moments and good special effects didn’t meet expectations as its advertising pitched.

  2. gridbug responds:

    Tops:
Legend of Boggy Creek (1972) One of the first and STILL one of the best! Best Drive-In Bigfoot Docudrama.
Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas (1957) Peter Cushing and Forrest Tucker, with a successful emphasis on atmosphere over in-your-face shocks. Best Thinking Man’s Bigfoot Film.
The Mysterious Monsters (1976) Narrated by Peter Graves, more akin to Boggy Creek though not as effective.

    Bottoms:
Too numerous to mention, but they know who they are. 🙂

  3. mauka responds:

I have not seen many Bigfoot movies. I have seen a abomination of a movie. Now I don’t remember a name but it followed a criminal that posed as a boy scout leader and on a trip they encountered the giant of the wood’s. It was just so BAD!!!!!!

  4. twblack responds:

#1 Legend Of Boggy Creek 1972.

The WORST — Little Bigfoot 1997.

  5. davemcc responds:

Good Bigfoot movies are far out numbered by bad ones. The best is ”Boggy Creek”, the worst is tough to call with lots of bad ones, Snowbeast, The curse of Bigfoot, Sasquatch, The recent Abominable on sci fi channel was the same as the title.

  6. Mike Smith responds:

Legend of Boggy Creek is the best I have seen so far. But I remember as a child seeing a Bigfoot movie at the theater with my father. I asked him a few years ago before his passing if he remembered the movie, and the name. He remembered taking me, but the name he could not recall. All I remember about the movie was that it had 2 or 3 Bigfoots in it.

  7. sasquatch responds:

Legend of Boggy Creek is best the rest are all pretty bad for one reason or another. The Bristish film about the Yeti-I think Peter Cushing was in it? may be an exception, I just remember seeing a few scenes as a kid with my eyes bareley propped open watching Creature Features. There is a film that has yet to be completed called the Primevals that had lizard Men and a cool Yeti in it, here’s a clip of the cool stop motion FX.

  8. Walter responds:

I don’t remember the name of it. It was on AFRTS at Kadena AB Japan about 1978. They would show almost anything. The “film” was set in the Pacific NW and looked as if it had been shot with a handheld home movie camera. Everything about it was bad. Made “LoBC” look like “Star Wars”.

  9. Bluewater responds:

    Loren,

“Mysterious Monsters” & “The Legend of Boggy Creek” are my two favorites.
The worst has to be “Shriek of the Mutilated” & right up there with it Bob Grays Bigfoot.

  10. simianfever responds:

My favorite has to be “Night of the Demon”. Bigfoot looked ridiculous (par for the course with these movies), but the over the top gory death scenes were downright hilarious.

The worst for me was “Sasquatch Hunters”, CGI bigfoot nonsense. It’s a lot easier to pick the worst of this group. So many choices…

  11. jayman responds:

In the humor category, I think honorable mention should go to one of those Rankin-Bass claymation Christmas specials from the 70s. I don’t remember the name but it centered on this elf who wanted to be a dentist instead of a toymaker. He eventually got to practice his skills on this abominable snowman type creature.

  12. jayman responds:

Ok, the Rankin-Bass picture was Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964). Hermie was the elf dentist-in-training.

  13. YarriWarrior responds:

The worst I have seen is “to catch a yeti” starring Meatloaf. The yeti is about knee-high, and has huge feet. A real torture to watch. My fave is the “abominable snowman of the himalayas”. Saw boggy creek at the drive-in when it came out! Liked it a lot. I have around here somewhere a movie I think is called “bigfoot” that has a boy that makes friends with a bigfoot. A really bad film. I will dig it up. Yarri

  14. Mnynames responds:

Boggy Creek is tops, although I can remember watching several re-enactment-style documentaries from the 70’s on bigfoot that captured some of the same creepy feel. It helped that at least one of them was narrated by Rod Serling. I have to say, though, that Harry and the Hendersons is the only one I actually own. As for worst, I seem to have avoided all of the really bad ones over the years. Since I’ve been reading Cryptomundo, I now have my own pool of critics to draw from, and I value the opinions presented here. Hence, why I’ve avoided Abominable…

  15. gridbug responds:

There’s a new (?) 2-disc documentary that’s on Netflix called “Sasquatch Science” that, unfortunately, falls far short of the mark, though not exactly for the reasons you may think.

Here, for your consideration, is my actual Netflix review:

This “documentary” is the perfect remedy for those sleepless nights… pop this one in the DVD player and I guarantee you’ll by snoozin’ before the first chapter’s over thanks to the agonizingly unending home-video quality footage of acceptably legit experts in their fields sharing their insights into the Bigfoot phenomena. The low rating isn’t due to the lack of useful, impressive statistical information on display, but rather for the presentation side of it. I ain’t tryin’ to be lectured for too-many-hours-to-count, I’m tryin’ to see me some Sasamasquatch re-enactments or at the very least some good first-person encounter stories! Yes, I believe in the probable existance of these creatures, but I fear that this 2-disc yawner will turn more people off than win any converts. Stick with “Legend of Boggy Creek” to get the maximum bang for your buck.

I’m sure there’s plenty of folks who’d disagree, but that there’s my two cents on the situation, for whatever it’s worth. Excelsior! 😀

  16. texasgirl responds:

Best: “Boggy Creek II and the Legend Continues”

  17. nshumate responds:

“The Beauties and the Beast” has to rank as one of the worst. (Shameless plug: I reviewed it here.)

Moderator’s note: the website the link goes to has adult content.

  18. badkitty responds:

    Can’t go past Boggy Creek

  19. Dark-Obsessor responds:

    Boggy Creek-Best
    Harry & Hendersons-Funniest
    Bigfoot (Greys’)-Sucky

  20. TNSwampApe responds:

Well, new to the site, but i would have to rank Creature from Black Lake right up there with Legend of Boggy Creek.

  21. jodzilla responds:

    Best: Harry and the Hendersons
    Worst: The Geek

  22. DWA responds:

I just found this thread. Who cares how late I am.

    BEST: great job, Roger Patterson.

WORST: pretty much all the other bigfoot video I’ve seen. With the exception of Peguis, Manitoba 2007.

(I don’t watch “bigfoot movies” and never have. The real search is too much fun.)
