Update: Calling Bigfoot: Will He Answer?

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on July 28th, 2011

Bob and Kathy Strain have been profiled here on Cryptomundo before.

Kathy Strain Bigfoot

On the trail of Bigfoot are Bob and Kathy Strain of Jamestown, seen here with a wooden replica of the creature and 14-inch castings of footprints left in the Willow Creek area after a famous 1967 sighting in Humbolt County.

I came across this video that was posted on the FoxNews Video website from yesterday with the Strains employing call blasting to try to lure in a Sasquatch.

Update: The video was the second part of a news story. Below is the first part.

  1. Nominay responds:

Nice to hear from someone who has been committed to the search for 20 years and yet is undeterred by not having come across much. I’m probably in the first of 20 such years myself.

  2. sasquatch responds:

Yes, great to see such dedication, but lately I’ve been wondering about the effectiveness of “call blasting”, howling & screeching into the woods. I have read probably 80% of all posted sightings of bigfoot on BFRO, GCBF, Bigfoot Encounters, etc…and can’t recall if I’ve EVER read even one where people were out call blasting and a Sasquatch came into sight. Most are road crossings, or chance sightings by hunters (Who were being QUIET on purpose).

I think this technique may be barking up the wrong tree (GET IT!?).

Furthermore I believe it may actually drive Bigfoot’s away. On the other hand I’ve read many reports where Sasquatches were apparently attracted into the open by the sounds of children playing, laughing etc… or by smells of cooking.

Some new techniques are in order.

  3. wolfatrest responds:

My problem with call blasting is that you have no idea what you’re blasting. You may be blasting a call that means “Stay away, those stinky humans are in the area yet again”. I would think a sasquatch would be intelligent enough to know the difference between a real call and one broadcast through speakers. It seems to me that most encounters have been accidental and announcing your presence this way would be counter-productive.

  4. fuzzy responds:

Nice to see Kathy and Bob are still actively at it…

Re: “sasquatch” comment above – “…and can’t recall if I’ve EVER read even one where people were out call blasting and a Sasquatch came into sight” – there are several reports of distant responding howls getting closer and closer and then stopping – so how are we to know if other curious Bigfoots respond silently, then lurk, just out of view, watching?

Creatures have been startled from hiding when fisherfolk or families or partyers have unexpectedly stepped into the woods to relieve themselves or gather firewood, and we know Bigfoots can move around soundlessly, so it doesn’t invalidate call-blasting.

I would scan the location’s periphery with Gen 3 Nite Vision, Thermal and audio gear, call blast, continue scanning, wait until all the echoes die away, scan and blast again, wait longer, scan and blast etc… wait, what’s that heat blob moving at the edge of the woods? It’s getting larger – IT’S COMING THIS WAY!

    Quick! Where’s my camcorder?

  5. Crypto_Don responds:

How do people call blasting know that they aren’t hearing another group call blasting. Especially in areas the the PNW, where BF hunting seems to be more common, two individual groups could be screaming at each other and not know it.

  6. sasquatch responds:

Yeah Fuzzy, If you read my post again you’ll see that I said; I know of NO report where call blasting led to a SIGHTING…You can imagine that a bigfoot is just inside the tree line after call blasting or wood knocking or whatever racket you want to make, but unless you see it, it’s all theory/wishful thinking. Some of the other posters seem to understand that this could be counter-productive and have come to similar doubts about this technique. I too wonder if sometimes Bigfoot call blasters get responses from others doing the same thing. Wouldn’t it be funny if Sasquatch was somewhere between all these noisy humans and their bad impressions laughing his butt off?

  7. wolfatrest responds:

I agree with Sasquatch, I don’t consider hearing something in the woods that “might” be a bigfoot coming closer to be an actual encounter.

  8. Kathy Strain responds:

We just got back from an expedition. Call blasting was the heart of it and we would not have gotten what we did without it (no bodies or DNA – to quell any rumors). I don’t know in particular what Nominay is referring to, but we have come across quite a bit with our work. There is no disappointment at all.

The call blasts we use have a signature “added” sound that ensures that other humans hearing it will know it’s a recording vs. live. I have no fear in my remote area that “other” bigfooters are operating/call blasting without my knowledge.

I think what should be emphasized is that researchers are free to pick and choose their own methods. What works for them may not work for someone else. If you think something new will work, you should try it. We have tried children laughing and cooking smells (along with many, many other things). Call blasting has been one of the few consistent methods that we feel produces results.

  9. peteyweestro responds:

I also agree that I haven’t read many reports where it seems like “call blasting” was a smashing success, but playing a recording of children playing or even babies crying seems like it could work really well. Then you might play sounds of females talking and see then if you get any results.

  10. Nominay responds:

I suspect the same as sasquatch and wolfatrest. My uninformed opinion has always told me that call blasting is stupid. It just strikes me as pointless and arrogant.

  11. DWA responds:

I’m of two minds on call-blasting.

    1. Who knows what you’re blasting? Plus, you may be introducing counterproductive “noise” (in much the same way as our artificial lights screw up the star maps of moths and other insects). In the former case, numbers at least appear to be so few that one might not want to do this.

    2. Then again, sometimes you do get a response. I’ve read more than one TBRC account that describes what certainly seems to have been a response to a call blast.

I’ve imitated ravens’ calls on numerous occasions. I think I’m pretty good; but I also think I’m no raven, and that they can hear that. Almost every time I do it, though, I get what clearly seems to be a response; the bird (frequently plural) not only comes back vocally, and repeatedly, but intently circles my position, invariably coming closer to me, almost undoubtedly to identify the clown because not too many of those people critters do this.

Until clear negative ramifications of doing this can be identified, though, not sure I can be against it (I mean, after all, I’m doing it too, right?)

  12. mjolnir1964 responds:

Sasquatch vocalizations have always interested me. I remember as a kid watching “Mysterious Monsters” with Peter Graves back in the 70’s. I remember in the film, some recordings of vocalizations were played, and those recordings sounded NOTHING like the sounds used today. Have those old recordings been explained or ruled as a hoax? I cannot remember the names of those involved, but they were in the movie. Anyone?
