Nessie hunt: Monster missing, presumed dead, say Loch Ness experts

Some people are willing to take a leap of faith when it comes to Scotland’s most mysterious celebrity.

Others need more concrete proof.

But now even some of the nation’s most ardent believers have voiced their doubts over the famous Loch Ness Monster.

There have been no recorded sightings of Nessie since October 2012 – sparking concerns that the Highland beast has gone into prolonged hibernation.

Some Nessie experts have even raised concerns that the mysterious monster may have died.

President of the Loch Ness Monster fan club, Gary Campbell, said: “The real reason is that these days people are much more savvy and people can quickly identify whether it’s the Loch Ness Monster or something much more ordinary like a log floating in the loch.”

But Gordon Holmes, who has travelled from Yorkshire each year since 2003 to visit the loch, said the reports of Nessie’s demise may have been exaggerated.

He said: “If you go back to my 2007 sightings I captured two moving creatures so if one Nessie has died that means there is another one still out there.”

    Again?!

  2. John Kirk responds:

“Nessie experts?” How can anyone be an expert on something they have not seen and may not even exist?

Gordon Holmes talks about filming two creatures, in my opinion his video sure looks like wind touching down on the surface of the loch and creating windrows.

I’d love for there to be a Nessie – I am Scottish after all – but I have yet to see anything convincing in the evidence department.

  3. Goodfoot responds:

John Kirk: Do dinosaur experts not exist?

agreed. (although I REALLY wish there was something real there, just not convinced yet)

hmm…. so following along with what you’re saying… how can anyone call themselves “bigfoot experts” ?

goodfoot: dinosaurs were proven to be real, we have evidence, bones, tracks, scales, etc.

    nessie? not so sure…

  5. The Ghost responds:

For Nessie to exist at all, you need a breeding population. You saw 2, very lucky & good on you, but that would only be the tip of the iceberg. From years of research & hunts at the Loch, there’s no doubt in my mind that the Loch contains an unusual creature, but its one that rarely comes to the surface.

  6. NMRNG responds:

Why do Nessie believers continue to ignore the fact that Loch Ness is simply far too small of an environment to support a breeding population of such a large creature?

I can accept the possibility of the existence of sasquatch because sightings typically occur in environments that have the food sources to support other large omnivores, i.e. bears. I also find that the broad shoulders that are so typically reported in sasquatch sightings are not similar to the narrow shoulders of a standing bear, so it seems that misidentification cannot be the sole explanation for the sightings.

However, virtually all of the credible reports of Nessie sightings could very easily be explained by misidentification – waves, birds, otters, seals, fish, logs and other floating debris, etc…. I really don’t understand why people are clinging to the myth rather than facing reality. Nessie does not exist.
