Mermaids: The New Evidence

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 26th, 2013

In MERMAIDS: THE BODY FOUND, Animal Planet stunned viewers with captivating footage and an in-depth investigation of these fantastical creatures. Toward the tail-end of this year’s Monster Week, Animal Planet revisits this startling, groundbreaking topic in the much-anticipated follow-up special, MERMAIDS: THE NEW EVIDENCE, premiering Sunday, May 26, at 10 PM ET/PT. In an exclusive interview with Dr. Paul Robertson, former NOAA scientist who led last year’s investigation, journalist Jon Frankel probes for the unfiltered story and reveals new evidence of mermaids that only has come forward in the past year. MERMAIDS: THE NEW EVIDENCE follows a two-hour MERMAIDS: THE BODY FOUND The Extended Cut, which airs Sunday, May 26, from 8-10 PM ET/PT.

reckon people are going to ring that NOAA place asking if mermaids are real again…

  2. Van Lightning via Facebook responds:

Why is animal planet trying to pass this off as real. I saw it last year and knew right away it was fictional programing. Just weird.

  3. Elise Carter via Facebook responds:

I’ll probably forget, but did see new stuff leaning toward the existence of mermen or merpeople. There are ancient cave drawings of them somewhere. We will learn more now that people are believing we don’t know everything.

  4. Goodfoot responds:

It’s always Mermaids, Mermaids, Mermaids with this kid. Seems like his dad never had “that talk” with him…

  5. dconstrukt responds:

    ROFLMAO!!!!

ya… Elise Carter, and i’ve got a bridge in NYC to sell you. 🙂

  6. chadgatlin responds:

I didn’t see this last year, I just watched both the old one and the new one. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is supposed to be fake right? It seems to me that it’s like pro wrestling, you know it’s fake, it’s just for entertainment. It’s like a “what if” story, in this case being used to help further some people’s cause as far as radar testing. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think the viewer is supposed to believe any of the mermaid “evidence” is real.

I saw a dragon mockumentary a long time ago that was like this. I actually thought it was real at first, because I began watching in the middle when they had found a frozen dragon somewhere. Turns out it was just a “what if” thing. Looked it up, and that was an Animal Planet thing too.

  7. skeptik responds:

The mermaid shot in Kiryat Yam was so cool, and so staged.

I think mermaids belong to philosophy of perception or perceptual psychology and not zoology, unfortunately.

  8. sasquatch responds:

That show is SO annoying…the fake in-studio interviews etc…

obnoxious….apes grew webbed hands, and their legs turned into fish tails all because they tried to catch fish on the seashore? …ridiculous…just like cows or “wolf like” creatures turning into whales…because they hunted along the beach…

Kodiak bears will soon start to become salmon I guess…and watch out duck hunters! You’ll possibly notice some strange affinity for Daisy Duck…and may want to check between your toes periodically, in case you start to grow some webbing.

  9. maslo63 responds:

Sasquatch: Whales did evolve from even-toed ungulates. Are you calling that into question? Evolution as a whole? Or just the notion that they evolved that way from hunting fish? It sounds like you’re denying evolution entirely but reading your second paragraph it would seem you don’t really understand enough how evolution works to criticize it like you seem to be doing.

  10. sasquatch responds:

Yes I am denying evolution. The dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
Whales have always been whales and cattle have and will always be cattle. See, I can make definitive statements too.
I know enough about evolution to know that it’s bunk.
    You need to catch up.

  11. cryptokellie responds:

With the “Bloop” sound anomaly having been assigned to ice-quakes that have made similar sounds, the whole premise is false. Why are the producers extending this canard? Apparently for ratings. While sonar testing does affect marine life, there is no evidence that sonar causes whale strandings. Whales have been stranding ever since there have been whales…millions of years. The entire body form and details for the “Merbeings” is not consistent with marine mammal physiology. A short list of inconsistencies would include; The svelte, sexy body shape with external breasts. The head/neck attachment, long thin forearms with fingers- a serious hydro-drag concern. Heavily webbed fingers on the hand. Try taping your fingers together with layers of heavy tape and see how they work – even out of the water. A human head shape with deep eye sockets. No external fat reserves (blubber). The Merbeing CGI footage is awkward at best and not up to industry standards. Add to this a cast of recognizable small role and character part actors…but.

The only real problem I have with the “Mermaid” mockumentaries are that they are being presented on the Discovery Channel and being accepted by the gullible as real information.

Entertaining – yes, misleading – yes…it undermines what this information outlet has tried to present and casts doubt on what one might or even should believe when viewing this network.

Btw…a small note to Sasquatch…many whales and dolphins have been found with rudimentary hip bones and hind limbs, sometimes actually protruding from the body cavity. I suggest you view this Factual evidence and decide whether your “Always been whales” have evolved from four-legged animals or are evolving into four legged animals…you can’t have it both ways.

I, for one am “caught up” on the facts. I am also a Christian and believe in God and the true evolution…divine order – found everywhere and inside everything.

  12. sasquatch responds:

“Hip bones”-Claspers for having sex, and deformities…many people and animals have been found to have many deformities-extra fingers etc…. Also I believe in de-volution (because of the fall) So, I think we may have lost some stuff since the fall, therefore so have animals?

    I don’t believe in millions of years…

Investigate soft tissue in dinosaurs. They are only thousands of years old!…So everything’s out the window with long age belief systems. Even “Sue”- the largest T-Rex skeleton has now had soft tissue extracted-this is sort of a hush- hush subject with evolutionists – especially since the “contamination by bacterial agents” theory has been thoroughly refuted.

Also; if you’re a Christian-you believe you needed redemption from sin right? That IS the first step in being ‘born again” as Jesus said we MUST be…
Furthermore; How did death exist before the fall?

“Through sin came death” Oh wait, that’s in the Bible, oh… maybe you’re not a “Christian” who actually reads and believes it?

So YOU need to figure out; Which way is it? “You can’t have it both ways”. Theistic evolution is almost as silly as atheistic version(s)

My opinion; God is not stupid enough to use such a brutal, long, failure laden, preposterous process as evolution.

I say he made myriads of different kinds of creatures all at once all over the planet in different land and sea-scapes…through time and disasters (mainly the fall and Noah’s flood) many have become extinct. Within these many kinds there are variations-I don’t call that “evolution” as some erroneously do…just expressions WITHIN “kinds” of the pre-programmed DNA (life is information based-I.E. there is intelligence behind it)and genetics-which have very distinct boundaries by the way…This is REAL science-not the rubber band, silly putty world of popularized visions of evolution commonly seen on PBS, Discovery channel, animal planet etc…Please take this in the concerned brotherly way I really mean it to be…I believe Evolutionary theory is and has been a huge stumbling block for mankind in our need to re-establish a relationship with the living God who loves us.

  13. cryptokellie responds:

    Sasquatch…

Please go to Google and LOOK at documented images of cetaceans with visible hind limbs – with leg and hip bones inside. That settles that. You don’t believe in millions of years? How about millions of miles? Light speed is a measurable item. It is also a measurement of time. Don’t you believe that the Sun is millions of miles away from the Earth? How do you think that distance is measured? Evolution is part of the divine order. Think about it. As for your Biblical quotes, Many civilizations existed before the first books of Bible were written by Moses around 1400 BC. Are their beliefs and faiths any less valid? Does not God as the divine spark embrace the entire existence? Doesn’t your God embrace us all?

As far as my faith, I watched my Mother die when I was four years old. I never got an explanation. I looked into my children’s eyes when they were born. I held my Father in my arms while he died. Last Saturday night, I gazed into my daughter’s 28 week old premature baby’s eyes…don’t ever question my faith, rather question your somewhat closed minded pseudo-semantics. That is the opposite of faith…

  14. djwcaw responds:

As a Christian I’m with the old-earth views of cryptokellie here. Though I wouldn’t agree on ‘beliefs/faiths less valid’ part (not a place for that discussion.) The young-earth interpretation of Genesis is neither scientific or Biblically sound. It is a ‘blind faith’ belief (fortunately loosing its grip in the church today) and Christians need to be educated on the issues. Check out some good sites like reasons.org (old earth creationism) or biologos.org (theistic evolution) for some solid scientific information. Remember Ephesians 4:15 and go find out the ‘truth.’
