Introducing Neckie, Seneca Lake, NY’s answer to the Loch Ness Monster

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on August 27th, 2010

The video below was submitted to Cryptomundo by reader Jeff Koyen.

The commentary below is taken from his website, Caveat Viatar.

It starts slow, but watch the whole thing.

Sure, it’s probably fake. But I doubt it’s an editing/CGI trick. Because, let’s be honest, if you’re going to fake a monster video, you’d do a better job of it. At 2:14 and 4:25, for instance, Neckie looks like a giraffe suffering from rigor mortis. At 3:53, you’d swear it’s an inner tube being raised out of the water. It should be noted that neither would be an easy task for a diver hovering just beneath the surface.

Maybe the user who posted the video is right: It’s Caddy’s brother. That is, another specimen of Cadborosaurus willsi, aka the Sea Serpent of British Columbia’s Cadboro Bay.

I’m not drawing any conclusions; that would violate my fortean nature. Anyone else care to be the expert? Scott Bowen? Loren Coleman?

And yes, please credit me with naming New York’s newest monster.Jeff Koyen

I’m sure some technical expert will take this and analyze it, stabilize it, enhance it, and repost it for our own further analysis. Until then, I’ll reserve my judgment, only to say, it’s verrry interesting.

  2. sasquatch responds:

It’s a deer or a moose and right at the end they elongated the neck with CG/photoshop…They cut off the video before it walked out on land.

  3. fmurphy1970 responds:

With all due respect to sasquatch, I don’t think this film is of a deer or moose. A deer or moose swims with its head held up out of the water, while this object is mostly below the water. I think it unlikely that this could be faked, but would like to know more information surrounding the film. Jeff Koyen has posted the film, but i would like to know who actually filmed it, when and where. Maybe someone could work out the size of the object, if we knew where it was filmed. From the apparent distance in the second half of the clip, and with reference to the pier, this looks like a larger object than say an otter or even a deer.
Footage at 4:23 is intriguing. The movement is odd and kind of jerky. Looks more like a tail rather than a head and neck at that point.
look forward to hearing what other folks think.

  4. wshinhamjr responds:

The first part of the video made me laugh because it looked to me exactly like a beaver swimming. There was no lenght to it and then in the end it looked like it hit a log or stick and it popped up and they stopped filming.

The second part where it was darker was more difficult to explain and if that was a hoax they did a pretty good job of it!

  5. Kitsos responds:

    No water disturbance around it.
Love the idea of adding “old style” film scratch effect.
    Not buying it.

  6. BoyintheMachine responds:

    My guess would be CGI.

  7. proriter responds:

    YouTube strikes again. . . .

  8. CryptoRaven responds:

My first guess is hoax, as well. But to me it looks like someone is under the water pushing various things up out of the water. The tail-like thing toward the end of the film looks reminiscent of “SPLASH meets THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON” with some nice old grainy film photoshopping. Entertaining, but definitely fake IMO.

  9. gridbug responds:

C’mon, people! The fact that they used the “old fashioned film” effect and eerie music on this video is all you need to know! How can anyone even remotely take this seriously?!

  10. ScottAR responds:

Who puts a soundtrack on a real monster video? Its sounds like it came from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

  11. spredthvrs responds:

I have spent a lot of time at Seneca Lake and searching for stories of a “Lake Monster” in Seneca Lake due to its (by some accounts) unmeasurable depths in certain spots. The only account I could find is of a cruise ship in the late 1800’s. In the beginning of the video it may be a real creature, Seneca Lake has a large population of very large carp, some up to 6 feet long, you can make out a dorsal fin and you can make out that it is a carp going to the surface and “rolling”. Towards the end of the video it appears to be a carp that is playing with a tire that had been disposed of in the lake, that is definitely not unheard of. However, there in my opinion is obvious tampering with the video when the “neck” of the creature comes out of the water, it is choppy, stiff, and overall horrible looking.

  12. maslo63 responds:

As a Seneca Lake resident and frequenter there is nothing more that I would like to believe than the existence of a lake “monster” but I’m highly skeptical that there is anything in there. As deep as it is the lake is just too well explored and busy with human activity, not to mention that reported sightings are almost non-existent. What would said monster even be? Seneca Lake was created by glacial activity so no plesiosaurs and the lake is far too populated for it to be any kind of creature that needed to come up for air. What I’m getting at is that I don’t necessarily believe the video is a hoax but I don’t believe is shows any kind of unknown creature. I also don’t believe the video shows a carp, common carp do live in the lake but they don’t reach 6′ in length, more like 4′. Lake sturgeon however do exist within Seneca’s waters so if anything that is probably what we’re seeing.

As for deer and moose, I’m not seeing that at all and moose don’t live in the region.

  13. Kopite responds:

I agree with CrypoRaven. To me it has the hallmarks of somebody underneath the water pushing something up and waving it around.

  14. TheForthcoming responds:

    Meh.

    Fake possibly.

  15. ILoveSnakes responds:

The fact that they added a spooky soundtrack takes all the credibility away for me.

And as mentioned by others, the neck seems much too stiff for a living animal.

IMHO, this is just another dumb YouTube hoax. Which is a shame.

  16. edgeblade responds:

To me it looks like someone swimming with an inner tube in hand and a long puppet in the other.
