Recent Sierra Nevada Mountains Sasquatch Sighting

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on December 10th, 2013

My good friend Tom Yamarone interviewed this eyewitness about his recent Bigfoot encounter.

Russ from Santa Clara, CA recounts his bigfoot sighting. He backpacked with two friends to the Cottonwood Lakes Basin in the Golden Trout Wilderness. They were at South Fork Lakes. We met on October 9, 2013 to tape this conversation in Santa Clara.

Tom’s narrative of the encounter:

Three friends were fulfilling the first item on their bucket list: catch and release California’s state fish, the endangered Golden Trout. They enjoyed a full day of fishing in the spectacular Cottonwood Lakes Basin at South Fork Lakes in the Golden Trout Wilderness. This high Sierra wonderland of granite basins, small lakes, ancient & rare Foxtail Pines and Golden Trout was everything had anticipated. They retired to their tents after a backpacker’s meal of ramen noodles and slept well after their high elevation hike and day of fishing. No campfires above 10,500 feet in the Golden Trout Wilderness – this location was approx. 11,400 feet above sea level.

One of the three got out of his tent at 11:30 p.m. and surveyed the moonlit basin around the lake. It was a bright, full moon night on September 19th beneath the Harvest Moon. He found a nearby tree to relieve himself and that’s when the encounter of a lifetime began. Unknown to Russ, our eyewitness, he was about to check off a 2nd item on his bucket list – one they had not originally written into the script. He was about to witness an 8 foot tall, bipedal, hair covered creature striding right by his camp on its way to the lake. Here is his report.

  1. Ploughboy responds:

Ordinary people having and relating extraordinary encounters. Some people have never heard the first one of these, and need to. Others, like me, have heard enough of them to consider them a defined part of reality if you are venturing into backcountry on this continent.

I’d also note: Trained observer and outdoorsman. Who better to believe?

  2. Goodfoot responds:

But 25 minutes? How about just the highlights?

i know its just a story because we don’t have any evidence to go by… but he’s sounding very credible to me.

    i totally believe him.

I think MOST of the legit sightings don’t have video or photo simply because they just “happened”… purely random sightings when people weren’t out looking for them.

so based on a lot of data, we seem to have a hotspot in sierra nevada mountains…

  4. skeptik responds:

It is an interesting account, but there are two problems:

    1) He rules out the creature being human when

    a. it’s dark and

    b. there is another human nearby.

This entails that he wants or wills seeing “non-human”. In the dark, limbs appear longer, and moonlight can fool you to think the scenery is well-lit, when it is perception that adjusts for low lighting.

    2) Related to the above, but different. Hallucinations are common in poor light when you are tired. They don’t mean you are crazy (they are common) but affirming them is.

At this distance, light and bodily state it is safe to assume that the man either mis-perceived or perceived without perceptum (creature being there). That what he saw was determined as Sasquatch means he was more than likely to draw that conclusion.

That doesn’t mean it wasn’t a nice experience, it just means the experience wasn’t about what he thought.
