Seattle International Film Festival to Screen Willow Creek

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 22nd, 2014

SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival) is screening Bobcat Goldthwait’s Bigfoot film, Willow Creek, twice during the festival.

If you are in the area, I suggest that you attend a screening.

Described by Jimmy Kimmel as “Scary and the Hendersons” and by writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait himself as “The Blair-Squatch Project,” found footage movie Willow Creek is a radical departure in Goldthwait’s career after directing a string of black comedies (World’s Greatest Dad, God Bless America).

Bobcat Goldthwait mixes comedy and horror for Sasquatch-hunters Jim and his girlfriend Kelly, who venture into the woods against the advice of the area’s equally creepy locals.

On October 20, 1967, while riding horses in northern California’s Six Rivers National Forest, Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin caught on film what appeared to be an unidentified creature. The resulting footage has become legendary among Bigfoot true believers, and provides the inspiration for this found footage horror gem that will send shivers down your spine. Amateur filmmaker Jim is convinced that the elusive Sasquatch exists. His girlfriend Kelly isn’t so sure, but joins him on his pilgrimage to Willow Creek, a tiny community in the immediate vicinity of where the Patterson-Gimlin footage was shot. Rolling into town, they discover a tourist trap built around Sasquatch gimmickry, complete with wood sculptures, comic murals, “Bigfoot Burgers,” and even a Sasquatch-obsessed singer-songwriter. But when the couple leaves this charming hamlet behind to venture into the surrounding forest, they uncover terrifying evidence that may finally prove the creature’s existence. In his newest film, cinematic provocateur Bobcat Goldthwaite crafts a frightening exploration of isolation, obsession, and modern myth.

  1. Iceman responds:

Craig, it was at around this time last year that my best buddy, Marc, and I were preparing to visit you, as I had won Cryptomundo’s contest to see the premiere of Willow Creek. Needless to say, we had a blast there meeting my favorite Fortean author, Nick Redfern, and camping out in Fouke, Arkansas with Lyle Blackburn’s guidance! This year, Marc and I will be heading to Anderson County, Kentucky, alleged breeding ground and migratory route of Bigfoot, as well as Bobby Mackey’s, Waverly Hills Sanatorium, and then on to Ohio and their Moonville Tunnel, before heading back to Tennessee. Our thanks once again, for making last year’s trip so memorable for both of us, with your unparalleled Texan hospitality!
