Who You Are: Cryptomundo’s Reader Profile

Posted by: Loren Coleman on April 20th, 2009

This is about you.

Over 11,000 individuals of the 30,000 to 23 million daily readers of Cryptomundo have registered at the site. All 11,000 registrants can leave comments.

During the recent challenge to post a comment about yourself on the posting entitled, variously, “Who Are You?,” a total of 340 of you left enough information for us to gather a profile of the typical reader. In terms of research surveys, this is a significant number and while we can’t say we know the entire silent majority, your comments give all of us a good idea of you.

Thanks to Tabitca who assisted greatly in assembling this database, from the broad population responses to be analyzed.

Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the worldā€™s leading cryptozoologists, some say ā€œtheā€ leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sandersonā€™s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Colemanā€™s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

    Nice results, Loren…
Wish more women were making themsleves known. Come on girls, you know who you are!!!

  2. springheeledjack responds:

    That’s just about right…interesting…

  3. Point Radix responds:

The general result (male / 26-40 / U.S.) sounds plausible enough, but I wonder how representative a sample opted to participate. The >80% male, for example, could it be that female readers/users are more hesitant to give out information?

  4. Rogutaan responds:

I’m actually kind of surprised about the age group. But I’m kind of biased about tha age group of the internet in general, and didn’t really think about the kind of people that visit this site. So I guess thats about right.

  5. cryptogirl responds:

Ok, those poll results are definitely too man-skewed for my liking. Let me add a bit more girlishness to the mix:

    gender: female
    age: 30
    occupation: law student
    location: Portland, Oregon

I love everything sasquatchy or otherwise hominid-related; living in Portland, I expect to run across a bigfoot any day now (although, given the number of fuzz-faced hipsters in this town, it may be difficult to know for sure). Anything to do with Thunderbirds, Mammoths, or other allegedly extinct Pleistocene megafauna always piques my interest. My favorite posts are definitely sighting reports – both current and historical.

Cryptomundo is consistently one of the best sites on the web. The balance between skepticism and romanticism is dead on. Thank you Loren for your scholarship, diligence, wit, and your profound ability to remind me that beyond my often mundane life waits a world that is wonderful and mysterious and open to almost every possibility. Next time you find yourself in the “other” Portland, look me up; I’ll buy you a drink.

  6. darkshines responds:

Haha, I am none of those things, I guess I am not the typical Crypomundo reader!

  7. Loren Coleman responds:

Cryptomundo appeals to the atypical. That is our key.

And when only 340 give info, you know that might just leave out a bit about you if you did not share during the initial go-around.

  8. ctinn responds:

I guess I am an abnormal reader! I’m a 26 year, stay-at-home mom who did a week of college before I decided to quit and am now running my own jewlery website. I live in OR.

  9. magneticcrow responds:

I missed that one, but I do have to put my two cents in. Can’t allow the results to be THAT dramatically skewed. šŸ™‚

  10. Maine Crypto responds:

I missed this one so I need to add my 2 cents! I am a 25 year old female and I teach Pre-School and am working on my masters. Also, I obviously live in Maine. Too bad that so few people responded out of a possible 10,000! Keep up the great work Loren!

  11. aclockworkorange responds:

    Hello!

I am a 22 year old male student living in Santa Barbara, CA.

No Cryptids around here, just surfers, blonde girls, and tourists.

Although I did see a suspiciously Bigfoot-like man on the bus today. šŸ˜‰

Loren, just have to say that I love the site! I check for updates at least 3 times a day! The stories and evidence are so compelling and interesting! Thank you for all the hard work!

  13. fossilhunter responds:

    Greetings All!
Interesting results! I think the best finding of all, based of the above photos, is that I’m much younger looking and slimmer than I thought!! ROFL! We should take a running start (read: 2 year) at the crypto version of a Star Trek convention! I can see it now: 1/4 of the guys dressed as Bigfoot, two guys who think they look like a chupacabra, and five women moving as a close group throughout the center of the aisles with worried looks on their faces!

  14. EastTexan responds:

    Loren and all –
I’m excited to see the number of young (under 25) posters who responded. I hope they keep their fascination with this remarkable field. The future of discovery is theirs.
