If you are thinking of moving to Vancouver, British Columbia, or already live there, and want to be involved with cultural cryptozoology, this may be your dream job:

If you’re about six feet tall and can act like a friendly Sasquatch, you could qualify to be an Olympic mascot. Vancouver 2010 is looking to hire full-time staff to wear the Sumi, Miga or Quatchi outfits.

Maureen Douglas tells the Province newspaper about 30 volunteer actors are also needed over the next two years. In the next two weeks, there will be postings for volunteer positions on the Vancouver 2010 website. by Roberta Graham, “About 30 volunteers needed to dress as 2010 Games mascots,”, Vancouver Province/News 1130. January 8, 2008.

Are they going to be “volunteers” (unpaid) or will they be “hired full-time” (thus apparently paid)? Anyone know? If anyone applies and gets the job, please send a photograph of yourself in costume to Cryptomundo.

BTW, my sincere thanks to Steve Stredulinsky for his donation to the International Cryptozoology Museum of one of the now apparently very rare Quatchi mascot dolls (shown above) during the holiday season. Also, sincere appreciation goes out to the anonymous donator angel who was able to send much needed assistance (via PayPal at lcoleman@maine.rr.com ). You know who you are, and your donation was a lifesaver. Survival is important, and routinely a question. These are tough times. Thank you.

Well dang, I’m too short and live in Texas, but hey, sure sounds like a fun gig! Thanks Loren for the information and posting the photos. That Quatchi mascot doll is quite the specimen. I’m sure you will give it a nice home at the museum.

  2. Lestat3407 responds:

What are Sumi and Miga supposed to be and how do I get a Quatchi?

  3. seethingcauldron responds:

Sumi’s a thunderbird of some variety, but I’m not sure what Miga is. All threee were supposed to have been creatures taken from the local folklore.

To get one, I would first contact the Hudson’s Bay Company. The Bay (in Winnipeg) was selling the dolls, as well as all manner of clothing, pins and paraphanalia with the Olympic characters on it. I hinted like mad for ‘santa’ to get me a Quatchi for Christmas but I guess I haven’t been a good enough girl.

Mascot info and store information available here: http://www.vancouver2010.com/mascot/en/profile_q.php

  5. red_pill_junkie responds:

I not only have the height of a Sasquatch (well, with 6′ 4″, at least a juvenile!) but also a Sasquatch’s charming sociability, so I definitely couldn’t apply 🙁

    Lestst3407-

Here is the summary of each mascot from http://www.vancouver2010.com/mascot/en/ the official website.

Miga is a young sea bear who lives in the ocean with her family pod, out past Vancouver Island near Tofino, British Columbia. Sea bears are part killer whale and part bear. Miga is part Kermode bear, a rare white bear that only lives in British Columbia.

Sumi is an animal spirit who lives in the mountains of British Columbia. Like many Canadians, Sumi’s background is drawn from many places. He wears the hat of the orca whale, flies with the wings of the mighty thunderbird and runs on the strong furry legs of the black bear.

Mukmuk is a small and friendly Vancouver Island marmot who always supports and cheers loudly for his friends during games and races.

Quatchi is a young sasquatch who comes from the mysterious forests of Canada. Quatchi is shy, but loves to explore new places and meet new friends. Although Quatchi loves all winter sports, he’s especially fond of hockey. He dreams of becoming a world-famous goalie.

There is also a link there for buying mascot pins and plush animals. Which brings up the (semi-serious) question, “If Bigfoot hunters hung Quatchi dolls from trees, would this attract a Sasquatch, or send it running away as fast as it could go?

  7. plant girl responds:

WoW! sounds like a great job!!!
