Illinois Mt Lion Attack: Teen Lied

Posted by: Loren Coleman on October 11th, 2011

Tonight is the evening of October 11th, when there is a Full Hunter’s Moon. Perhaps it is appropriate that this moon and its lunacy would deliver some news of the hunting variety as the moon appeared on the horizon.

The 14-year-old hunter in Pike County, Illinois who said he was attacked by a panther on Sunday, October 2nd, has admitted that he lied. He fell from his tree stand, and made up the story about the cat attack because he was afraid his parents won’t let him hunt alone again if they knew the truth. Source.

Thanks to John Winterbauer for the update.

Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

  1. Ragnar responds:

I thought the story was fishy from the beginning. He wasn’t nearly messed up enough to have fought off a panther/mountain lion/beast/whatever.

As for hunting alone? After this story, he’ll be lucky if his parents let him go hunting at all.

  2. recurve responds:

went too big on his story poor kid.

  3. maslo63 responds:

So he fell out of his stand and decided to tell everyone he was attacked by a cougar instead because he was afraid his parents wouldn’t let him hunt alone? The mind of a 14 year old…

  4. David Breen via Facebook responds:

That story doesn’t make any sense. Did this kid think a mountain lion attack story would go over better with his parents than falling from a tree branch? If he was afraid of his parents not letting him hunt alone again, a panther attack story isn’t going to do you any favors kid.

    Let me get my belt…

  6. mandors responds:

What’s up with lying kids and Illinois? First, you had that miscreant bigfoot hoaxer. Now, this?

  7. aenea responds:

The kid never thought it would hit the news. Maybe he even thought that he would look good in front of his friends facing off with a mountain lion. Macho stuff.
