Israel’s Mermaid Fever

Posted by: Loren Coleman on August 11th, 2009

Israel is in the grips of mermaid fever after numerous sightings of the legendary sea creature off its coast.

One town council is taking the reports so seriously it is offering a $1m (£609,000) reward to anyone who can prove the existence of a mermaid in its waters.

Kiryat Yam municipality, near Haifa, says it has been told of dozens of sightings in the past few months.

They say it is a female figure, it looks like a young girl.

“Many people are telling us they are sure they’ve seen a mermaid and they are all independent of each other,” council spokesman Natti Zilberman told Sky News.

The nautical nymph is only seen in the evening at sunset, according to media reports, drawing crowds of people with cameras hoping for a glimpse.

“People say it is half girl, half fish, jumping like a dolphin. It does all kinds of tricks then disappears,” Mr Zilberman said.

Asked whether a dolphin or large fish could be a more rational explanation, he insisted: “They say it is a female figure, it looks like a young girl.”

The council denied its offer of a reward was a publicity stunt, but said it hoped to nurture the mermaid as something which could bring in more tourists.

Capturing a mermaid is not necessary, a verifiable photograph will do, Mr Zilberman said.

Asked if the council can afford the payout, he told Sky News writer Dominic Waghorn: “I believe, if there really is a mermaid, then so many people and tourists will come to Kiryat Yam, a lot more money will be made than a $1m.”

Well, that was very close to Dagon’s old stomping grounds.

Did not know that. Thanks for the information.

Hope more “sightings” occur and hopefully a photograph would be snapped. Maybe even have the mermaid videotaped.

Mermaids are some of my favorite cryptids. Great story here, Loren.

If it is verified there is a mermaid here swimming around “Dagon’s old stomping grounds,” then Kiryat Yam will be more than just tourist attraction, I agree. Actually Council Member Zilberman may have to worry about TOO many people overflowing the area. Plus the army of satellite and news trucks that would swarm around the town would present a problem. Zoning regulations may have to be redrawn. 😉

Were it not for the specifics of the sightings, I’d cross my fingers for Deep Ones. As it is…

Not holding my breath on this one, sorry.

    $5 on Albino Dolphin

    $MY HO– USE it’s not a Mermaid

  5. Fhqwhgads responds:

My comment about Dagon referred to the half man, half fish Philistine and Amorite god, not Lovecraft’s literary creation.

As an aside, I can’t stand Lovecraft’s writing. He seems to think big=scary, old=scary, and mindless=scary. Maybe he was frightened by a redwood as a child.

    Fhqwhgads:

Lovecraft’s writing has never really struck me as scary. It’s really better enjoyed as fantasy/sci-fi with a focus on the occult and unknown.

  7. Thieves responds:

I find this story especially interesting since I recently watched a noted evolutionist argue the case for the “aquatic ape hypothesis:” the idea that humans evolved from primate ancestors who dwelt in watery habitats.

There also seems to be a possible association with the idea popular among many “metaphysical” types the dolphins are somehow our ancestors…or at least point to a prominent split of the family tree.

Sorry. Comments have been closed.
