What Did This Ever Turn Out To Be?

Posted by: Loren Coleman on August 1st, 2011

As you may recall, this first appeared last December. It’s is back, making the rounds again. A deer hunter at Berwick, Louisiana, allegedly captured a strange image of something wandering through the nearby woods at night. The hunter near Baton Rouge reported to the media that he found this bizarre image on his deer stand’s broken trailcam’s memory card.

Just hate to see a good mystery left unsolved. What did this turn out to be?

We have looked at this before and posted opinions that it is a hoax and is not a hoax. One thing it did NOT turn out to be is an image from the movie Super 8, as was reported by some sources back in December.

Berwick is a town in St. Mary Parish (shown above), Louisiana, United States. The population was 4,418 at the 2000 census. The first white settler to trek through the wilderness in this area was Thomas Berwick, a surveyor from Pennsylvania who was working in Opelousas, Louisiana. He settled along the banks of the Atchafalaya River in the late 18th century. Today the town of Berwick is home to several seafood processing plants and numerous boat companies. On the eastern side of the state are the reports of the Honey Island Swamp monster, a hairy humanoid or anthropoid cryptid reported from Honey Island Swamp, Louisiana since 1963.

  1. aaronlife responds:

there was some talk about it being a hoax here, with a supposed link to the creator of the creature

  2. Nominay responds:

I’m going to go w/ photoshopped. Unfortunately these days, sometimes a photograph is not a photograph.

  3. Shroyer responds:

I had read somewhere that this was an advertisement for some kind of trail cam.

  4. RWRidley responds:

Apparently it was a promo for a video game release called Resistance 3 – Creepy Resistance Viral Spooks Media

  5. MattBille responds:

Smells like a hoax. (Skinny guy in a costume, or CGI added to the original footage? Not sure.) Just try to convert this image in your mind to a believable animal. I can’t do it. It reminds me a little of the monsters in the movie The Burrowers.

  6. Mausinn responds:

I thought this was found to be a hoax and was mentioned as such on Fact or Faked.

  7. j_porter responds:

its a photoshopped picture of a deer, look at the arms, their exactly like deer legs.

  8. mrdark responds:

I don’t see how this is tied to Resistance 3, as that looks nothing like a Helghast. The only critter in gaming it resembles are the husks in Mass Effect, and it’s clearly not tied to that.

Hoax, clearly, blatantly photoshopped. But I don’t think it’s a viral for anything.

  9. Redrose999 responds:

I think it was a promo of something. Not sure, I’m sure folks here will post links.

  10. gridbug responds:

C’mon gang, pay attention… as RWRidley posted above it was viral marketing for the Playstation 3’s new Resistance game. Speculation is fun, but this one’s been solidly debunked.

    🙂

  11. lordoftheonionrings responds:

Yeah most likely a hoax but can you imagine checking your trail cam and finding that on it!

  12. crowmagnumman responds:

    @mrdark
You’re thinking of the Killzone games. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet gotten into the Resistance games. But as RWRidley’s link shows, the pictured creature does pretty closely resemble a specific type of alien in the Resistance games. And though Insomniac didn’t 100% confirm that they were behind it, they seem to have strongly hinted that they were. Good enough for me.

  13. ETxArtist responds:

    Nice catch, Ridley.

  14. skeptik responds:

@Nominay: What do you mean “these days”? Trick photography was invented before photography itself. (Visit Rome and see the perspective illusions they had painted on the walls there, for instance.)

It’s naive to think a photo represents reality, when it is only the reflected light’s imprint on film.

  15. Nominay responds:

skeptik – my friend was one of the first people in to use the Photoshop software over 20 years ago before it went public. Go ahead and argue with me, I can seek some clarification from him if need be.

  16. cryptozoodles responds:

Hi folks, I’ve lurked on this site for many years, first time post though. I work in the video games industry so this one is close to my heart. As per other folks’ comments, this one was passed off (although never confirmed as far as I know) as viral marketing

    http://playstationlifestyle.net/2010/12/10/creepy-resistance-viral-spooks-media/

I don’t work for the company who made Resistance 3 by the way!

  17. DTK responds:

At first glance I said, “Photoshop.” Now, looking at it again, I still say, “Photoshop.” Nothing about the image smacks of realism to me. JMO.
