Lost Tapes: Preview of Sneak Preview

Posted by: Loren Coleman on October 23rd, 2008

Here is some footage from the upcoming sneak preview of the Halloween screening of “Lost Tapes” on Animal Planet. You can certainly see that the underlying theme in this show may be a violent one. Or is it one of confused realities and trickery?

The program is putting out this public relations blurb:

Rare and exclusive footage of a park ranger uncovering a vicious attack scene in the woods. The attacked man had chased (what he had thought was) “Bigfoot” through the woods just days earlier, capturing the animal on film for the first time ever.

Is “Lost Tapes” going to be another example of what you see is not really what you see?

The original allusion to me was that it was nonfiction, but I think someone slightly misinformed me. The trailer makes it look more like Blair Witch Horror meets Sasquatch Mountain. Is Animal Planet trying to give the SciFi Channel a run for its money?

Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. Holy crap!!! That is freaky! But I’m keeping an open mind about it. Also I checked the info on the episode. They messed up chupacabras again!

  2. raisinsofwrath responds:

This is obviously fake. Aside from the bad acting I’m sure if someone were found hanging upside down in the middle of what appears to be an attack that it would be all over the mainstream news.

Maybe it’s Whitton hanging there. Loren, where were you on the night of….

  3. Christoph responds:

They should better show those “lost” bigfoot tapes that John Bindernagel talked about. I’d love to see them.

  4. NickJones responds:

Loren, I think you (and the previous commenter) are absolutely right about this not being a legitimate video. Once it got rolling with the dramatically spaced items on the ground and the perfectly-timed commentary I repeatedly said “fake” out loud with increasing volume and incredulity until it reached a peak when the body was revealed.

I thought Animal Planet was all about filming meerkats and such, not getting involved in fictional enterprises like this…

  5. Kimble responds:

Har har. I’m not sure what I liked more, the gun and spent clip or the boots placed side by side.

Looks like a nice beer & pretzels kind of show.

  6. shumway10973 responds:

Never did like the Blair witch stuff (or any knock offs). I don’t know about anyone else, but as for me I would either turn off the video camera so I could run or film, stand and take what’s coming (probably just run). So, are they now trying to make big foot into an animal that hunts humans and has the thinking capacity to hang someone by their feet? I just don’t get stuff like this. This is animal planet? I would rather they actually went out and searched. This is really bad filming.

  7. red_pill_junkie responds:

First they changed their logo, and now this lame attempt to raise the ratings.

Bad form, Animal Planet. I hardly recognize you anymore 🙁

  8. Aaron responds:

    Crap acting.

This would all be in the news.

    Obvious Blair Witch rip off.

  9. thehoch responds:

I would love to see Bigfoot come out of the woods and hire an attorney for defamation of character.

That would make for a better story than this last tape meets Blair Witch Project crud.

Seriously, Bigfoot could sue those cops from Georgia, Tom Biscotti, and now Animal Planet. Maybe a class action lawsuit where a Chupacabra and the Jersey Devil can take the stand in their own defense. Wouldn’t that be great?

  10. mrbf2006 responds:

Well, color me disappointed. Looks like a knockoff of Scare Tactics. I will tune in next Thursday to see what it is about, but I don’t have a good feeling about it.

  11. mrbf2006 responds:

One other thing-looks like if we want serious Cryptozoological programming, we should stick to Monsterquest.

  12. Doug responds:

    That’s entertainment, folks!

  13. Alligator responds:

    Shumway said,
“So, are they now trying to make big foot into an animal that hunts humans and has the thinking capacity to hang someone by their feet?”

He he, I immediately thought of the Wampa from “The Empire Strikes Back” Remember when it hung Luke Skywalker upside down in the cave for future dining? I’m sure that scene influenced this little ditty.

  14. korollocke responds:

Oh fer petes sake! Turn off your brains and fire up the pop corn, it’s halloween! Have a little fun.

  15. Lightning Orb responds:

    You’re kidding me

  16. Ceroill responds:

Just saw the first two episodes of this. As you suspected, Loren, this show is not truly documentary. As it says at the beginning and end, “This story is inspired by the possibility that unknown animals exist”. First one was on the Chupacabra [sic], the second on Bigfoot. I wouldn’t even call them dramatic recreations, or dramatizations, as the incidents are fictional, though supposedly based (loosely) on accumulated reports. Over all not terribly impressed, though the one on Bigfoot was rather amusing at times.

I have a question though, that hopefully someone can enlighten me on: How common is it really for park rangers and border guards to keep a vid camera in one hand as they go patrolling, or investigating (especially if they decide they suddenly need to run through the woods or sagebrush)? Seems unlikely to me, but hey, you never know.

Oh…and a couple of questions about things stated in the ‘Chupacabra’ episode: Do most cryptozoologists really think that the ‘chupacabra’ is an unknown relative of the Aye-Aye? Also is there really a theory that this critter is what originally inspired gargoyles in medieval Euorpean architecture, and that they tagged along with explorers, arriving in Puerto Rico hundreds of years ago?

  17. one4show responds:

This show is absolute garbage. I was so excited to see it then I was so disappointed once it started. How could a studio exec give the OK on a show this bad. From the terribly horrid attempt at Chupacabra sounds, to fake news reporters, to a park ranger washing her underwear in a stream being watched by bigfoot and being stalked by a poacher who spit on her hidden camera. The show was an Hour of my life wasted. Definitely sticking to MonsterQuest from here out.

  18. Ceroill responds:

Ah, you noticed that bit of silliness too? She wasn’t washing anything except her underwear and socks. In the stream. On two different occasions. Oh and she had her camcorder with her as she was washing out her delicates. What, the cabin doesn’t have running water? The whole thing was badly written, badly produced, badly acted, and I think badly conceived from beginning to end.

Sorry. Comments have been closed.
