Boing Boing, Babies, and Bigfoot Birth

Carter Family Drawing

Boing Boing buddy and cryptozoological aficionado David Pescovitz recently posted an interesting item about “Cryptid Baby Onesies.” David was talking about how his friend Amy Miller gave him and his wife “the perfect gift” for their forthcoming baby. It was…

…a soft onesie emblazoned with a Bigfoot iron-on! I was even more excited to hear that Amy made the iron-on herself. She handcrafted a mini Bigfoot figure from assorted spare doll parts and other materials, photographed it, and then tweaked the image in Photoshop. I was delighted to hear that the Bigfoot design is just one in a limited series of Cryptid onesies. Along with Bigfoot, Amy is now offering Mothman and Giant Squid designs. Coming soon are the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, Tasmanian Tiger, Jersey Devil, Chupacabras, and Nessie. The onesies are $20 including tax and shipping. Makes a great gift for any Fortean or fringe parents!

David’s story with a couple pictures of the onesies and the Miller link are here. Now cryptozoologically-aware baby showers can occur throughout the country!

Why did I wait until now to post about the cryptid baby onesies? Because I wanted to use this opportunity to congratulate David and Kelly for the healthy bundle of boy they received on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at 5:15 pm, the wonder hero Lux Henry Sparks-Pescovitz! Best wishes to the whole family, a new cryptozoologist has been born!

In celebration of Lux’s new birth and others everywhere, of higher primates from human to Bigfoot, here’s an image imagined (top), by Dr. Igor Bourtsev, of another then recent birth. And, of course, this leads me to more challenging questions for hominology…if Bigfoot exist, what then is the birthing process like? How often are there multiple births? How are baby Bigfoot raised? What percentage of sightings contain youthful Bigfoot? Where do the youth go to “learn” about being a Bigfoot?

The Bourtsev drawing is inspired by the tales of the Carter Family: Fox’s mate Sheba with her baby and children, as Janice observed them in 1973. Click on the image above to make it larger.

Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.
