Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

  1. IMAdamnALIEN responds:

Way to go, excellent! You will be heard by millions of people, don’t get nervous. 🙂

  2. Bob Michaels responds:

Hope that Bigfoot will also be tuned in, and decide to come out of the shadows.

  3. PhotoExpert responds:

Excellent! I will certainly tune in for that broadcast.

  4. Benjamin Radford responds:

I have to wonder if this sort of thing doesn’t do more damage than good to the field of cryptozoology. If we want the public to accept the possibility of Bigfoot as a real creature, perhaps “Coast to Coast” isn’t a great showcase. It seems to me that this undermines the work of myself, Jeff Meldrum, and many others (including Loren) who are trying to bring some scientific and public respectability to Bigfoot.

After all, Bigfoot is lumped in with psychics, alien abductions, crazy conspiracy theories, people who hear voices and see fairies, and so on. You don’t have to listen for more than a few minutes to hear some of the nuts who call in to the “Art Bell Comedy Hour.” I understand that it’s good publicity for the Art Bell crowd, but is this really the image we want to project to the rest of the world?

  5. Loren Coleman responds:

Ben, I think you are too narrowly pigeon-holing the guests and appeal of Coast to Coast AM. Yes, many people are interested in aliens and crop circles, psychics and ghosts, but then many guests are merely seeking an audience of 5 to 10 million people a night that they cannot reach in the mainstream media.

See the list of guests here.

There is a diverse list of folks, from astronaut Buzz Aldrin to presidential candidate Ralph Nader who have used the program as a friendly platform to talk to an audience that listens in to C2C. Several people, like James Oberg (NASA consultant and UFO skeptic), Michael Shermer (founder of the Skeptic Magazine), and Seth Shostak (Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute) have appeared to give a balanced view of subjects.

I have brought skepticism, Forteanism, and openmindedness to my cryptozoology appearances, and I really wonder what you would have us do, Ben? Turn over the show to only the fringe people and have no one heard the middle road in looking into cryptozoology?

Frankly, Ben, it seems you are projecting shortsightness if you think that being on C2C is “unscientific.” The goal is actually more one of making people aware that someone has something to say, share, and disseminate who happens to be sane and knows his data.

  6. Benjamin Radford responds:

    Hi Loren

    No need to get defensive.

It’s true that Coast to Coast has had a variety of guests, not all of whom are cranks. It’s also true that among the general public, the show has a definite “loony” association. Remember Art Bell’s role in the Heaven’s Gate suicides? How he helped promote the idea that a space ship was trailing Hale-Bopp?

I was not criticizing you or the show specifically, just asking what I think is a legitimate question: Will having Bigfoot lumped in with UFOs, psychics, moon hoax conspiracy theorists, etc., help or hurt the cause of bringing legitimacy to the search for Bigfoot?

You obviously think it will help, and that’s fine. I’m just offering another point of view, asking if that’s really the case.

  7. Loren Coleman responds:

I suppose I just was reacting to the framing of the question. I could reframe the question and say, do you think the reputation of Bigfoot researchers will be harmed by being lumped in with environmental advocates, politicians, skeptics, and musicians?

  8. bill green responds:

hey loren good morning wow you did a wonderful new interview about cryptozoology bigfoot etc on coasttocoastam tonight i just finished listing to it very informative A+ great job. bill green 🙂
