Paul O’Grady Show/03.02.09/17:00 GMT

Posted by: Loren Coleman on February 27th, 2009

Cryptozoology will be the partial or entire focus of The Paul O’Grady Show on Monday, March 2, 2009. LIVE!

The London program is on Olga TV, and will be broadcast from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, local time. While the show is well-known in the UK, it is virtually unknown in North America.

I’ll be their invited guest, and the topics will be cryptozoology (in general), the Dover Demon, Bigfoot, and Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster. ABCs (the UK’s Alien Big Cats) probably will creep into the discussions too. I might even talk about the Hobbs name game. I may be on for only five minutes, believe it or not.

The show is famed for its wild and crazy times, and, yes, I know what to expect (i.e. unpredictable surprises and comedy). Sometimes you have to be brave when you attempt to popularize, educate, and go mainstream regarding the study of unknown animals.

I plan to enjoy my brief trip to the UK, as I’ll be staying right next door to the London Aquarium and the London Eye, across from the House of Commons.

Postings for the time I’m gone are in place, as I am uncertain about my ability to blog from the wilds of London. Two guest blogs by Brent Swancer have kindly been contributed, and will be appearing while I am gone.

Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

    Bon Voyage, Sir Loren…

  2. scotcats responds:

Nice one Loren, the show at one time was planning doing a feature on UK big cats but it never came off. Look forward to watching you on the box over here, pity it wasn’t on the 22nd the Big Cats in Britain conference dates – damn we usually held it on the 3rd of March but changed it this year!

  3. sausage1 responds:

Looking forward to this, Loren. I will be at work so I’ll find a child who can operate my televisual recording device and bribe him/her to record it for me.

As you say, Paul O’Grady is not known outside the UK really, so for our non-British friends, here goes.

Paul hit the big time as a drag artiste. He played a very tarty, Scouse, mutton-dressed-as-lamb, peroxide blonde ‘slapper’ called Lily Savage. (listen to the Beatles’ song ‘Polythere Pam’ to get the idea – I believe Paul is a Scouser as well). It was very near the mark, very rude, very English and very, VERY funny.

He has since started making his name as a radio and TV presenter and is actually quite good, with an eclectic mix of guests and interests.

If you get a chance, shoot down into the East End and treat yourself to (i) the Jack the Ripper tour of Whitechapel (where I was born – no realtion though) and (ii) a bowl of Jellied Eels from the Tubby Isaac stalls in Aldgate – it’s what puts the cock in Cockney!

Also try a pint of real ale ( suggest a pint of Sam Smiths in Dr Johnson’s old pub Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese off of Fleet Street) and maybe you will understand why so many of the English posts on this site are so addled!

Enjoy your stay , Loren, nice to have you on our shores.

Well, I’m a non-drinker and a vegan, so thanks for the suggestions, but I’ll pass on two of the three. I’m going to definitely try to make it to Whitechapel, the Hell Fire (1666) monument, and the obelisk, thanks to a personal tour from my friend, Bob Rickard, founder/editor of Fortean Times. The rain on Sunday may call for a skipping of the London Zoo on this trip, according to the locals.

I’m out of here and off to London. Cheers…
