Weirdest Museums In World: ICM Picked As 1 of 7

Posted by: Loren Coleman on October 2nd, 2010

MSNBC and Concierge.com, in conjunction with research from Atlas Obscura, has announced their picks for “7 of the World’s Weirdest Museums.” This Travel/Travel Destinations feature was posted to appear online today.

One of their choices is the International Cryptozoology Museum (ICM).

Here is what they have to say about the ICM:

International Cryptozoology Museum, Portland, Maine

Who should go: Conspiracy theorists who wish “The X Files” was still on the air

Expect the unexpected: Starting in 1960, Loren Coleman, the founder of the International Cryptozoology Museum, in Portland, began amassing an unrivaled assortment of evidence, ephemera, and art related to the sort of creatures you believed in as a child.

Curious collection: If you feel the need to examine hair samples, foot casts, and fecal matter from the supposed Crookston Bigfoot — or to have your picture taken in front of a hairy, eight-foot model of the creature — Coleman’s museum is the place to do it. While lake monsters, abominable snowmen, and other yet-to-be-discovered animals are the main event here, there are also movie props, notable fakes (such as P.T. Barnum’s Feejee Mermaid, made from a monkey and a fish sewn together), and replicas of peculiar creatures (like the coelacanth and megamouth shark) that really do exist.

Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

Kind of a weird statement, considering that only once did the X-Files show a Bigfoot-like creature —the Jersey devil, which in the episode was some kind of Neanderthal.

And then there was the Big Blue episode when poor Scully looses her dog —one of the best, BTW— and the Chupacabras episode in the later seasons, but that’s it!

Still, they say there’s no such thing as bad publicity —and NO, it wasn’t Tom Biscardi who said that 😉

One comment, about the last photo on the page. The one of Loren wearing the hat and standing in front of the ‘squatch statue’.

When I first saw that photo just now, Loren, the first thing I thought of was you {with the hat} would make a good DOCTOR WHO.

    ‘Nuff said.

  3. mystery_man responds:

Conspiracy theorists who wish X-Files was still on the air? Really? They can’t be serious. Obviously whoever wrote this has no real sense of anything that crytpozoology is about.

  4. mystery_man responds:

Also, “the sort of creatures you believed in as a child.”

So not only are we all conspiracy theorists, but we are also like children as well. Well I don’t know about everyone else here, but I still consider Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy to be viable cryptids. Cough, cough.

Does this mean Loren Coleman is one of the 7 of the World’s Weirdest Museum curators? Keep up the great work!

Sorry. Comments have been closed.
