CNN’s “Paula Zahn Now” Tonight

Posted by: Loren Coleman on June 1st, 2007

Paula Zahn

I will be a guest on CNN tonight, Friday, June 1, 2007, between 8-9 p.m. ET, on Paula Zahn Now, discussing the Gordon Holmes Nessie footage.

Yes, this video is exciting a lot of people, but I wish it would have happened some other week, from a purely personal point of view.

As the producer was trying to convince me to come on the show via emails and several calls – my first priority, after all, is that it’s my son’s senior prom this evening – she says: “There is a
tremendous interest in the story (the most popular story on CNN.com) and I really want someone with your credentials to discuss it.”

Five minutes of my life on CNN to comment on this tape, and I’ll end up remarking, “It is still a mystery”? Okay, let’s see how this goes.

The CNN crew is coming to my home in less than four hours with one of those satellite trucks that stick a huge antenna into the sky. This will certainly blow my cover in this quiet neighborhood, and all the people around here will, no doubt, think there’s been a mass serial killer arrested or something like that going on.

Oh yes, I understand CNN may be matching me against a worthy (but created) foe, Joe Nickell. I told them I am no “true believer” and, indeed, wrote the introduction to Ben Radford’s and Joe’s book on lake monsters, as well as writing my own book on the subject with Patrick Huyghe. It could be a visual slugfest of book covers, more than any brilliant intellectual discourse about what we really know about this footage.

Will it be The Field Guide to Lake Monsters, Sea Serpents, and Other Mystery Denizens of the Deep versus Lake Monster Mysteries: Investigating the World’s Most Elusive Creatures? The battle of the book authors begins in only a few hours, as shown on a television set near you. Maybe we will even be allowed to say something insightful.

Ah, the media comes calling…

I’ll be fun.

  1. SharkFisher responds:

Thanks for the notification, I will try to catch it. The video is interesting, but I agree that CNN does a great job of promoting the people on screen with their books/movies/other paraphernalia to take your attention off of what is actually being said.

  2. LaFlamme responds:

    Vile media!
I’ll be watching, man. Go get ’em.

  3. Bob Michaels responds:

    Looking foward to it.

  4. pandafarmer responds:

Great job Loren! Five minutes is still worth it if it gets you some exposure and gives some legitimate thought put towards the subject. Just wrapping up reading Mysterious America myself, and would love to see more people run out and buy a copy!

  5. PhotoExpert responds:

Do us proud Loren!!! Just be yourself as always, and you’ll do great!

  6. CryptoGoji responds:

Wish I had cable or satellite out at my house. Maybe they will have it tomorrow on the net so I can watch it. Good Luck Loren.

  7. mfs responds:

CNN certainly chose the best. Look forward to the newscast. Good luck Loren! Joe whooo?

  8. slowwalker-32 responds:

Loren, this is a show I won’t miss.

  9. Munnin responds:

“…I really want someone with your credentials to discuss it.”

Hmmm. Must be a smart producer. Congratulatons Loren, on your Son (and you) surviving his high school years. My youngest graduated high school last year, and amazingly we came through it intact.

“Oh yes, I understand CNN may be matching me against a worthy (but created) foe, Joe Nickell.”

This reminds me of the recent woo woo thread. Out of the various media favorites among the self-described sceptics (Randi, Schermer, Klaas, et al), Joe Nickell has always struck me as the least likely of the bunch to behave in some kind of denigrating and contemptuous way toward those whose claims he is contesting. He seems to have a sweeter disposition than those other guys. That may be an erroneous impression on my part, but there it is.

    Thanks for going on CNN.

  10. bill green responds:

hey loren good evening i just watching your new interview on cnn paula zahn now about the new possible nessie filmfootage, you did a wonderful interview. A++ thanks bill 🙂 🙂

  11. mfs responds:

I expected as much from Joe(it was an owl) Nickell.
“Some of the best sightings around the world of lake monsters are “probably” otters swimming in a line creating a large, uh, maybe seventy foot long undulating creature. They’re just these cute little creatures we all love… ” Had to laugh at that one.

Loren, at least your responses with the very limited amount of time were much more resonable. Good job!

  12. Nessie-Chaser responds:

Not bad for five minutes. The skeptic they chose didn’t have anything more colorful than a giant beaver and a row of sea otters to explain Nessie away.

I didn’t like Paula’s definition of Cryptozoology as, “…the study of creatures that might not exist.”

    Ah, but who’s complaining?

  13. Bob Michaels responds:

Paula said she spent 29 days at the Loch during her stay in great Britain. You just have to get her interested in the field of cryptid research. Great interview.

  14. Judy Green responds:

Well, I missed it. I didn’t read this until it was too late to watch it. Sounds like you did a good job from the comments.

  15. DARHOP responds:

Very kool… I saw Loren on History International, ( I think that’s what it was called ) the other night… Good show…

Sorry. Comments have been closed.
