NY Dept of Environmental Conservation: Bigfoot is a Myth, No Such Animal

At one point it seemed that the New York Department of Environmental Conservation was protecting Bigfoot, now it is shattered

In October 2012 we posted an article titled, “NY Dept of Environmental Conservation: Do Not Harm Bigfoot“, in that article we announced how the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NY DEC) used loose language to “protect” Bigfoot. Essentially shielding any harm to Bigfoot in New York State. Apparently that loose language was too loose for Peter Wiemer of the Chautauqua Lake Bigfoot Expo.

Upon the announcement of the $10 million dollar Bigfoot bounty and unsatisfied with his first correspondence with the NY DEC, Mr. Wiemer, on October 26th, 2012 wrote a second letter requesting explicit language to protect Bigfoots from being harmed.

This forced NY DEC’s hand, they gave Mr. Wiemer explicit language, although not in the direction he requested. In the response dated November 6th, 2012 by Chief Wildlife Biologist, Gordon R. Batcheller, stated, “This mythical animal does not exist in nature or otherwise… However, the simple truth of the matter is that there is no such animal anywhere in the World. I am sorry to disappoint you. However, no program or action in relation to mythical animals is warranted”.

So now we have gone from NY DEC using loose language to, perhaps, protect Bigfoot, to using explicit language to marginalize Bigfoot. See visual aide below.

  1. bigfoots responds:

    how insulting..

Gordon R. Batcheller = ignorant fool

  2. David-Australia responds:

The arrogance of a 10th. grade bureaucrat whose had his nose put out of joint by a mere mortal…

  3. David-Australia responds:

    I should have added:

…is a world-wide phenomenon, much like large bi-pedal hominids itself.

  4. shmargin responds:

In 1625 British explorer Andrew Batell reported seeing a “monster” covered in hair except for the face and hands, which slept in trees and fed on fruit. According to him, this “monster” was most similar to a man, but “with the stature of a giant”. No researchers from western society had reported one until 1847 when physician Thomas Savage found several bones and a skull. It wasn’t until the late 1850’s that any European had reported seeing one alive. And the larger mountain variety were considered a myth until 1902.

This is of course the Gorilla, that many of us can go see in person at our local zoo now a days.

100 years isn’t very long from a scientific stand point, but it was just over 100 years ago that someone could have written the same shattering statement about gorillas.

People should always stay open to things that cannot be proven one way or the other.

  5. ProffessorLupin responds:

It figures…I live in NY state and there are trail cams of mountain lions, timber wolves, and still there are statements by DEC saying there are no mountain lions or wolves…trust me, those embedded rangers in forest areas of adirondacks have seen them.

  6. DWA responds:

I think any mind with this level of incuriousness should be barred from employment with a land management agency.

Everything else – everything – with the breadth and depth of evidence we have for the sasquatch has been scientifically confirmed. More than one scientist considers final confirmation a mere formality.

The frontiers of stupidity can only be rolled back a little at a time. Worth doing though.

  7. mandors responds:

If you know anything about biology, you’re either teaching it, researching it, or both. You’re not working as a two-bit pencil pusher for a hack government.

  8. mandors responds:

    Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

  9. maslo63 responds:

shmargin, there is a big difference between finding an unknown ape in a dense African rainforest and finding one in a heavily populated state that once lost 75% of its forests. I would also argue that 100 years is actually quite a long time when you consider the huge technological advances made in that time.

ProffessorLupin, I don’t think anyone will deny that either of those animals will occasionally wander into the state, the real question is whether or not there is a breeding population. I’m not sure their is but believe cougars will be breeding in NY within my lifetime, wolves I’m not so sure about. I would be interested in seeing these wolf trail cam photos. I’ve seen them for the mountain lions (like the one killed in CT) but none for wolves. Also NY has a population of large very wolf-like coyotes shown to be hybrids between the two species. Could not these account for the wolf trail cam photos? If you have a source I would love to see them myself.

  10. mystery_man responds:

I would say this is a bit of a bold statement. This is coming from someone that is somewhat “in the know” as far as these things go, at least in Japan.

Oh come on now, does anyone really need me to expound on the “mythical” ethnoknown animals that have been shown to exist? Do I have to do that? Because I will.

  11. maslo63 responds:

Yes mystery man, go for it. I could use a refresher.

  12. shmargin responds:

Kind of a strange coincidence that this guy releases a statement saying he knows Bigfoot is a myth just a couple days before someone else says they have proved Bigfoot exists via DNA evidence.

I’m a fan of strange coincidences, and this one ranks up there. State Forestry Officials cant have endangered species running around their logging land after all…

  13. William responds:

If bigfoot is at least part human and therefore has rights protected by the constitution, should wherever they happen to be found be considered “their land” or property?

  14. maslo63 responds:

Shmargin, did you miss the part where I said NY once had 75% of its forest destroyed? NY as with several north eastern states actually have more forests NOW than they have since Europeans arrived. There has been massive forest re-growth in the north east with improved farming techniques and people moving into cities. I’m not aware of any serious logging efforts in this state. It is actually the western states like Montana, Oregon and Washington losing their forests to lumber companies today. I believe Washington has lost something like 90% of its forests to clear cutting. This IMO does not help the case for sasquatch, we live in a very damaged country with little true wilderness left. Most ecologists will say the same. How can we remove 75-90% of our forests in a given state and fragment it with roads, farms, towns and cities and not have found one of its largest native animals? Look at our country on Google earth. The Pacific northwest looks like its had a cookie cutter taken to its forests. Save for the Adirondacks and other parks and WMA NY looks like a quilt with all its farms, much of the country looks the same. Anyway, my main point is that I don’t think the DEC is trying to make an excuse to cut down trees by denying the existence of bigfoot. NY has plenty of other endangered species as it is that require attention anyway.

As for this DNA evidence, I would be ecstatic if this really turned out to me something but I’m remaining skeptical for the time being. I think it would be safe for most of us to remain that way as well.

  15. squatchman responds:

People are so ignorant. They don’t know how much evidence we have. In a few years, they will be forced to believe it.

  16. maslo63 responds:

Squatchman, sure. You could say people are ignorant as to the evidence for sasquatch and most probably are but there are plenty of people who do believe in sasquatch that are ignorant regarding the fields of ecology, forestry, natural history and other sciences where an understanding of them is essential before taking an educated position on the existence of sasquatch. You believe whatever you want. I don’t want to believe, I want to know. When sasquatch is formally described by science I will happily renounce my skepticism because even though I don’t believe bigfoot exists I actually want it to exist. I just cannot force myself to. Ever hear the saying “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence?” well yeah, the notion of a 6-10′ primate that lives in North America, Asia, Europe and even Australia but has somehow been yet to be described is pretty extraordinary and when taking all that into consideration the evidence for it is not.
