Goatman: Flesh or Folklore Book

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on December 12th, 2014

Though the cases are often entangled with urban legend, reported sightings of bipedal, goat-like creatures do enter the realms of cryptozoology. Dubbed “goatmen,” the beasts are described as either hairy humanoids with a goat-like head or horned men with fur and hooves, often bent on frightening those who encounter them. With an abundance of shocking tales involving these modern satyrs, author and paranormal researcher, J. Nathan Couch, sets out to explore the phenomenon in his new book, Goatman: Flesh or Folklore. Within the pages, Couch recounts famous cases – including that of the Pope Lick Monster, Maryland Goatman, and the Lake Worth Monster – along with a hoard of other hoof-walking horrors as he attempts to separate fact from folklore.

Something in the Woods Movie

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on October 30th, 2014

There’s been a horde of bigfoot films lately, of which I’ve seen many (and reviewed in Rue Morgue magazine). Most are terrible and a few are good. Many of the terrible ones try to exploit the fame/name of The Legend of Boggy Creek or imitate it, or flat out take footage and paste it into their “movie.” I recently got a sneak peak at 7 minutes worth of an upcoming bigfoot-themed flick called Something in the Woods.

2nd Annual Boggy Creek Festival

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on October 22nd, 2014

The 2nd Annual Boggy Creek Festival is coming up this weekend Oct 24-25, 2014 in Fouke, Arkansas. Fouke is, of course, home of the infamous Legend of Boggy Creek. The purpose of the event is to bring together the local community and to share information about the sasquatch-like creature that has been sighted in the area for over a century. The festival features local arts and crafts, music, entertainment, food vendors, and presentations by local bigfoot researchers.

Camping at the Miller County Fairgrounds will be open starting Friday Oct 24, while the main event will happen Sat Oct 25 along Fouke’s main strip just off Highway 71 and Main Street. (Just come to Fouke and you can’t miss it!)

“Willow Creek” Movie Review

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on August 13th, 2014

Many folks have asked what I thought about Bobcat Goldthwait’s new Bigfoot movie, WILLOW CREEK. I was lucky enough to attend a screening with Bobcat himself and more recently view a screener of the released film. Rue Morgue magazine has kindly allowed me to reprint my review (which appeared in their July issue) for Cryptomundo.

The Secret of Blackjack Woods

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on May 31st, 2014

I don’t often read fiction, but occasionally a book comes across my path that beckons me to put aside scholarly texts and enjoy a good story. Case in point, The Secret of Blackjack Woods, the debut novel by Ashlen Brown. I recently met the Texas-based author at a cryptozoology event where I picked up a copy. Having no prior knowledge of her book, I was initially drawn in by its mysterious title and cover – which seems to hint at a Bigfoot story – and after a brief conversation with Brown I learned that indeed the impetus for her novel had come from an incident in which her mother and sister sighted a mysterious creature near their family home in Texas. This led to speculation that it could have been a Bigfoot which later inspired Brown to write her heart-felt and downright exciting novel.
