Posted by: Craig Woolheater on March 28th, 2016

This was on the cable car in Greenwich yesterday. something huge was moving under the water and then briefly surfaced. Are there whales in the Thames?? Or is it some weird submarine?

    Movie promotion?

  2. KnuckleHead responds:

I believe there have been Humbacks spotted there in the past. You do not even have to a second look looks just like a Humbacks. They don’t live there but occasionally just swim up stream so to speak.

That is pretty cool. It’s hard to tell just what it is, but comparing the size of the dark splotches and the distance it’s bigger than a car for sure. There’s a blue crane down in the lower left of the field of vision and the dark shape looks comparable in length from the end of the black fin shape to a small black blob out in front.

Of course it could be more than one swimming thing or a whale or any number of other explanations but it still looks pretty cool. I’d be curious to hear if any other people had sightings of anything odd.

    Guess we wait and see…

Good call Knucklehead–if you watch whales coming to the surface it looks like jagged edges and such forth.

Probably not a common site, but still cool.

    Nessie on vacation?

  6. David-Australia responds:

Seriously though, are you aware of any other media reports – surely many others must have seen it?

  7. pitbulllady responds:

Apparently, it’s not at all unusual for marine mammals, including whales, to enter the Thames River, and there have been many documented cases of this happening, so I’m definitely thinking that this would be a humpback whale. http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-33996020

  8. KnuckleHead responds:

I did a little research and both beaked and Humback whales have been verified there in the past. A juvenile Humback was found beach there, dead.

  9. Peter Von Berg responds:

Looks like the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.
