Alien Big Cats and Men In Black

Real Men in Black

We’ve all heard about the Men in Black and their attempts to silence UFO witnesses. But are similar characters trying to intimidate and silence witnesses to ABCs (Alien Big Cats) in the UK? It sounds bizarre, but it may be true.

Anyway, it’s the subject of my latest Mysterious Universe article, which starts as follows:

“During the early part of 1998, the British Government’s House of Commons held a fascinating and arguably near-unique debate on the existence – or otherwise – of a particular breed of mystery animal that is widely rumored, and even accepted by many, to inhabit the confines of the British Isles: the so-called Alien Big Cats, or ABCs, as they have become infamously known.

“It scarcely needs mentioning that Britain is not home to an indigenous species of large cat. Nevertheless, for decades amazing stories have circulated from all across the nation of sightings of large, predatory cats that savagely feed on both livestock and wild animals and that terrify, intrigue and amaze the local populace in the process. And, of course, the media loves them, one and all.”

My favorite Military-Industrial-Entertainment Complex (Fox Mulder quote, folks) portrayal of the MIB is the X-Files episode where the MIB’s in question were played by Alex Trebeck and Jesse Ventura, not the movie franchise, which I pretty much dislike.

While I accept the possiblity of Mystery Big Cats in the UK, I hold no belief in MIBs either in the UK or in the USA for that matter. Aside from questionable, anectodal reports from witnesses, there is no credible evidence of any kind for actual MIB – otherworldy or otherwise. The MIB mythos, begun in the 1950’s from myriad UFO witnesses seems to be a manifestation of reaction to disbelief concerning the claims of UFO witnesses and contactees. The only images of supposed MIB that I have seen looked like anyone…dressed in dark colored clothing. Nothing like the descriptions given by the MIB witnesses…tall, thin, pale or yellowish complexion dressed in a black suit and carrying a black briefcase or attache while often arriving in large model black Cadillac. Most times the MIB harass the UFO witness into silence or actually surrendering their sighting evidence by means of governmental threats of reprisal. This sounds a little like my dog ate my homework excuses usually employed by school children when not having anything to show in class.

  3. Goodfoot responds:

Every report is by nature “anecdotal”; you choose to believe or disbelieve based on the same criteria as everyone else. You’re not fooling anyone much.

  4. cryptokellie responds:

All reports are not by nature anecdotal. The reports of MIBs are indeed anecdotal as there is no real hard evidence for them…the reported number of people killed in a traffic accident is not anecdotal because the factual evidence is there and definitive. I’m not sure what you’re on about anyway, as I’m not attempting to fool anyone at anytime, anywhere.

  5. volmar responds:

Men in Black are the ultimate folklore beings out there. It seems reasonable they should investigate cats that don’t exist.
