Strieber and the Chupacabra Connection

Posted by: Nick Redfern on June 19th, 2012

Although far more well known for his writings in the fields of UFOs, alien abduction and horror-fiction, Whitley Strieber – author of the hugely-selling Communion – now turns his attention to a phenomenon of decidedly controversial proportions: the Chupacabra.

Says Strieber: “It’s quite extraordinary that this unknown breed of animal would be spreading across the United States and nobody even tries to find out anything about it?”

If Strieber actually said this: “It’s quite extraordinary that this unknown breed of animal would be spreading across the United States and nobody even tries to find out anything about it?”

He (1) must not be reading anything Loren Coleman, Nick Redfern, Cryptomundians, Ben Radford, and most of the skeptics online have written, or (2) may just be trying to say something stupid to get attention for his new book!!

The so-called “Chupacabra” being found “across the United States” of America, as well as the northern part of what technically are the United States of Mexico, are canids (dogs, coyotes, foxes, and other members of the dog family) with mange.

    Come on.

My guess is #2. Or more simply put $$$$ #2.

I haven’t listened to that episode of C2C so I don’t know whether it’s a faithful description of what Strieber said. But from what I read it would seem he hasn’t kept up with what is discussed in Cryptozoology forums. And referring to them as ‘Las Chupacabras’ is upsetting –“Las”?

And the article mentions “Whitley and his crew” examined the body of a chupacabras. Who are these crew-members and what are their credentials?

I respect Strieber and I pay attention to what he has to say, but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with him all the time.

    Hi guys,

I’m Donna Anderson, the author of the article you’re reading and I thought I’d jump in on the conversation, if you don’t mind. 🙂

The words that you see within quotation marks in the article are direct quotes from Strieber, taken from his appearance on Coast the other night. So yes, he actually did say that, Loren Coleman.

As for “Whitley and his crew” – During the Interview Strieber mentioned that ‘they’ had been ‘given’ the remains of an unknown creature. He didn’t say who ‘they’ were and I’m assuming he had at least one other person with him – maybe to help transport the body? He also kind of hedged around HOW they obtained the body and never said where or who it really came from.

corrick and red_pill_junkie – I tend to agree with you guys. I’ve been a fan of Strieber since I was in high school. However, he’s appeared twice on C2C in the last week or so. First, this ‘chupacabra’ show and then a news spot on that object out in the Baltic Sea. Both times it seemed to me – and maybe I’m just jaded – but both times it seemed to me he was trying to up the hype aspect of both stories.

I love the intrigue surrounding both stories, don’t get me wrong. And I’m a firm believer that there’s plenty of stuff out there that we just don’t know about yet. And trust me – I love a good, blood-chilling story as much as the next gal. But it just seemed to me that both interviews were pushing a little too hard.

However, I will say THIS – I’ll always love Strieber and I’d take him any day over RCH!

    Nice to meet you all!

Why would this surprise anyone? He got his start basically with “Wolfen” although he is more famous for UFO antics today. I would actually say he is quite a bit late in hopping into this. Remember how he at first tagged along with Bud Hopkins and then inserted himself as head of the “Abduction Crowd” for a period. Let’s see if this is the start of the same sort of thing concerning the Chupacabra since all of the bad press concerning the “Abduction Phenomena” leaders lately.
