A Skegness Sea Serpent?

Posted by: Nick Redfern on August 15th, 2012

Over at the Center for Fortean Zoology’s On the Track blog, you can find a piece of footage that purports to show a sea-serpent off the coast of Skegness, England. Real, hoax, mistaken identity?

As is so often the case the footage is blurry, bounces around from in focus to out of focus, and leaves us with something to ponder on.

Any thoughts?

And, from Lindsay Selby, there is a follow-up post to the footage (also at On the Track) which digs into accounts of other reports in the same area.

  1. Austin Morrow responds:

It’s an interesting video, but very inconclusive nonetheless.

  2. dconstrukt responds:

looks like its just floating there not moving…. who knows what it is, but you can’t sit there and say yes this is a sea serpent…. i mean cmon.

  3. fossilhunter responds:

    Could be basking sharks.

  4. Desertdweller responds:

Looks like a pod of orcas to me.

  5. muircertach responds:

Obviously its bigfoot in a submarine.

  6. CDC responds:

The Skegness Swim Team heading home after the Olympics?

  7. Kopite responds:

Very interesting video. I haven’t got a clue what it is but it doesn’t seem to be moving like basking sharks or orcas would move.

  8. shownuff responds:

I was going w/ the shark theory.

  9. scaryeyes responds:

This is certainly not one single creature, since the “humps” are not on a single plane but all over the place, sometimes even beside each other. I think CDC is the closest -the more I watch it, the more it looks like three people in the water trying to put on a sea serpent shape, with the one on the far left holding his arm up as the neck. This is especially clear at the end of the video where you can see the head and shoulders of the person playing the neck.

  10. Evil_Monkey responds:

my first thoughts where basking shark, its not very clear but the dorsal fin looks to be the wrong shape plus the 2nd dorsal fin looks to be above the water as much as the tail in some points which is odd as I would expect the tail to consistantly be much higher. It also appears to be bobbing about with the tide rather than a creature moving though the water.

  11. John Kirk responds:

It looks like several guys in black wetsuits with one extending his arm to look like a neck. The humps appear to me to be several other people who are so badly out of alignment while pretending to be protrusions.
Not at all real as far as I am concerned.

  12. Mibs responds:

Another conveniently “short” video of what he hope is compelling footage. Lemme guess, his smartphone memory chip ran out of space? Or did some representatives from the UK Coastal “MIBs” Commission appear out of nowhere and ask him to stop recording the mysterious object?

  13. alan borky responds:

John Kirk “several guys in black wetsuits with one extending his arm to look like a neck. The humps appear to me to be several other people who are so badly out of alignment while pretending to be protrusions.”

That or The Viz’ Pathetic Sharks!
