  1. Bipedal_Bill responds:

Screech owls don’t screech. It’s just a name. They make a low warble sounding hoot, a very soft and gentle sound. I know this because I had a pet gray phase screech owl named Obediah, who lived to be 9 1/2 years old. Occasionally, when they’re happy or preening their feathers, they might make a higher pitched warble-type sound. And when scared or displeased, like when I brought out the vacuum cleaner, they make the same higher pitched, but soft warble sound. No screeches. None. Nada. Zilch. Zip. Just thought I’d throw that in for what it’s worth.

Bipedal Bill: I could get started on sasquatch “screams,” but I won’t.

Yep. There may be no bigger mismatch in the natural world than the one between the screech owl’s name and the sound it makes.
