Curious, But No Smoking Gun

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 4th, 2015

Les reviews a Bigfoot tracker’s evidence caught on film, and explains how “pareidolia” – the psychological phenomena of seeing human faces in objects might be responsible.

Survivorman: Bigfoot Smoky Mountain Sasquatch

Les goes deep into the heart of Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains in pursuit of Bigfoot. Encounters with an unknown creature have been reported in this black bear hotspot, and Les knows that where bears thrive, Sasquatch can thrive, too.

  1. Goodfoot responds:

I’ll leave the “face in the bushes” alone. Let Todd Standing handle that nonsense.

But the other stuff – that’s very interesting indeed. But for some reason, I had a brief impression of a costume.

    Anybody else?

Indeed, ‘pareidolia’ is a weakness of humankind they may well spring from a strength.
As babies and todlers, so often we are raised by an adult to be face to face. It becomes what is usually our best method of identifying others. A hand-sized, eight legged shape on the wall quickly arouses our protective instincts, within a split second.
It’s caused so much woo crap, from faces on trees to Jesus’ face on a toasted sandwich to a face on Mars.
I agree that drawing over the shape for clarification is not helpful at all. Like the ‘alien constructions on the moon, which are often coloured in contrast to the colour of the rest of the surface. Upon seeing them one thinks that yeh that is a strangely uniform shape. On documentaries about it we are shown a section of the moons surface and the voice over tells us that this unnatural, probably constructed shape is a base or a factory or an atomic reactor just as the colour appears to show you which part of the surface he is actually talking about. The coloured shape looks indeed curious, but if you are lucky enough to see that scene without the colour later in the documentary (which you probably wont) you’ll see what artistic license is at work and how the surface shape is not nearly as convincing without the colour with straightened lines.
Had to get all that out of my system, thanks for reading.

Yes, Goodfoot, I got at least one brief impression of a costume as well.

Sorry. Comments have been closed.
