Monsters of the Deep on National Geographic Channel

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on November 23rd, 2005

One of the episodes of the "Is It Real" series on the National Geographic Channel was titled "Monsters of the Deep". It is still airing in rotation with the other episodes, several of which had a cryptozoological subject.

The Bigfoot episode was laughable. You could certainly see that NGC had an agenda, to ridicule the subject. Never saw the Chupacabra episode, so I don’t know how that one turned out.

The Lake Monster episode was pretty even-handed. While still leaning to the skeptical side, it was a much better show than the Bigfoot episode. Here is a link to a 2:10 long preview on the MSN website.

Our good friend John Kirk of the BCSCC was featured prominently in the episode, certainly lending to the credibility.

On the NGC site, you can preview several of the episodes. Click on the browse all video, and you can scroll through the pages and select what you want to watch. The Bigfoot, Lake Monsters and an episode of Naked Science about the Loch Ness Monster are all available for preview.

  1. Joe Biello responds:

Saw the Chupacabra episode. They of course totally dismiss it as overactive imaginations. They also explained away animal mutilations in this episode also. They didn’t even think of contacting Linda Moulton Howe for any response for the mutilation part. She is only one of the foremost experts in the field. Nat Geo must be on the governments disinformation campaign!

  2. Loren Coleman responds:

Scott Corrales, a Hispanic Chupacabras investigator based in the USA, is definitely one of the most overlooked authorities on the subject. He, btw, says that media folks who use “Chupacabra” are incorrectly using a singular form that does not exist. He says that the plural/singular usage is the same – “Chupacabras.”

i like the “is it real” shows – far better than most shows out there – though i do agree the bigfoot episode was pretty biased to the skeptical. monster of the deep was very good.

  4. WillyVolk responds:

I really enjoyed the “lake monsters” show and posted a review of it on Divester.

  5. Benjamin Radford responds:

I thought the Lake Monsters show was pretty good, myself. It shows how skeptical and, well, less skeptical researchers can work together… I think cryptozoology would benefit greatly from three things: 1) engaging in more debate and less name-calling; 2) double-checking sources; and 3) actually reading arguments on all sides of the issue.
