Sasquatch Sighting Threatens Colorado Ski Resort Development?

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on August 22nd, 2007

I was recently made aware of this article and video. The article was posted online on April 1, 2007.

That is probably a good indication of the veracity of the story.

Sasquatch Sighting at Wolf Creek

A video clip shot by a group of tourists atop Wolf Creek Pass on April 1, supposedly showing a Sasquatch roaming in the forest near the site of a proposed ski resort development, has brought up questions about the presence of an endangered species at the development’s location. Representatives for the Wolf Creek Development Company claim that the footage is a hoax, but attorneys for Wild Colorado, an environmental group that has been fighting the development for the past two years, say the video presents enough evidence to force the developers to fund a new Environmental Impact Statement.

Wolf Creek Pass Bigfoot

Wolf Creek tourist Elsa Smith catches her first glimpse of the hairy, upright creature that biologists have identified as Sasquatch or Big Foot. The sighting happened on April 1, 2007. Photo: Lem Burger

The footage was shot near the Wolf Creek Ski Area parking lot by amateur videographer Lem Burger, of Madison, Wisconsin, who was on a spring break holiday with his companions Mark and Elsa Smith, also of Madison, and Jack Sprat of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The clip clearly shows an upright creature walking through the snowy landscape, and at one point turning to threaten Smith, who was approaching the creature for a better look.

A spokesman for the Wolf Creek Development Company, Farmhead Bunmunch, told the Post in an exclusive interview Sunday that the supposedly controversial footage was a joke played by Wild Colorado, or possibly by some of their supporters. “All I see is some idiot jumping around in a monkey suit, acting like he’s a Saskachewan [sic.] There’s no controversy here… It’s just those Colorado Wildness people joking with you.”

But an attorney for Wild Colorado, Oliver Wendell Hunyak, disagrees. “The discovery of Sasquatch in the area around the Wolf Creek Ski Area presents real problems for any development that might take place in that area. We plan on going back to the Forest Service and ask that a new, amended Environmental Impact Statement be done.” Hunyak suggested that the humanoid Sasquatch obviously belongs on the federal Endangered Species list. “Those persons who thought they had a fight on their hands over the Spotted Owl and the Snail Darter — they ain’t seen nothing yet.”

Wolf Creek Pass Bigfoot

Alleged Sasquatch turned toward tourist Mark Smith and cameraman Lem Burger and made threatening motions before running off into the forest.

A biologist with the Colorado Wildlife Service, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Post that his 25 years of Big Foot research, and his review of the footage and also the tracks left by the creature, lead him to believe that this was an authentic Big Foot sighting. “This is the closest I have come to a personal sighting,” the biologist said in a Post interview on Sunday. “We are on the trail of the true Big Foot.”Claudia Rains

Of course, on youtube, it shows the video was uploaded on March 31, 2007. What might that tell the readers of Cryptomundo? The subjects in the video exclaim that it is their 2006 spring vacation.

  1. gloomer responds:

The bad acting by the “vacationers” makes it pretty clear that this is a hoax.

  2. brainsandgravy responds:

Hoax. The acting is bad, way over the top and unrealistic. The responses are not natural. Pretty funny hoax though. I give it a 7 out of 10.

  3. sschaper responds:

    The developer was the worst.

  4. Mnynames responds:

Well, I’ll give him a point for running towards the big hulking monster drunkenly staggering towards him, but I have to deduct a point for the camera man being more focused on the guy than the guy in the suit.

  5. twblack responds:

    What a joke!!!

  6. SOCALcrypto responds:

After reviewing the film in slow motion I noticed the tracks just behind the guy pointing things out. If you look you can see where he goes and where the camera man goes. Then they both go where the tracks already are. This tells me that it had been rehearsed at least once before. Look at the two separate trackways before they both chase after it. Oh, and another short armed creature. Although the person fills out the suit well. The arms still seem short to me.

  7. movieman100 responds:

    Man, it’s almost a scooby doo plot….
He would have got away with it if it wasn’t for those pesky kids!!!
    Ludicrous.

  8. xeddie responds:

Ummm Farmhead Bunmunch is the developer? C’mon. At least my folks did not name me Farmhead.

  9. shumway10973 responds:

Well, I wasn’t able to watch the video clip, but the second pic looks ridiculous. It almost looks headless, talk about your Scooby Doo plots–“It’s the headless sasquatch mystery!” Not to mention the first pic, sasquatch looks like he is wearing a jacket. Look at the shoulder(s) (especially right side) it looks like there is a sleeve, almost girlish style of clothing.

  10. sausage1 responds:

Actually the creature looks fairly good, but this is clearly a wind-up.

April 1st is a bit of a give away, isn’t it?

  11. Lyndon responds:

Hehe, pretty funny. I like that. Kind of like Snowbeast, with it’s Colorado ski reseort setting.

Liked the news lady’s name. Claudia Rains. Well, it’s kind of like Claude Rains (of the Wolfman fame).

  12. Huntress responds:

I’m laughing at the names too.

You can add Lem Burger, limburger, as in WI cheesehead. And some would say the attorny’s name is fitting as I believe that Hunyak means ‘a horse’s backside’ in Polish.

  13. Mothmanfan responds:

Wow… Bad acting… hoax!! And like Shumway said, the second looks headless! SOMEONE BEHEADED BIGFOOT!!

  14. Ceroill responds:

Claude Rains was the Invisible Man. The Wolfman was Lon Chaney Jr.

  15. cmgrace responds:

When I started reading and saw Wolf Creek Pass, I was excited. I was just up there this past weekend. Though I didn’t see any BF just some deer. Then as I read further I got a little more suspicious. And when I saw the video I was disappointed. On the upside that was the funniest hoax I have ever seen.

  16. silvereagle responds:

A close inspection of the second photograph, appears to reveal that the alleged bigfoot was in some kind of partial dimension change, in that instant. It’s head and neck appear to have undergone that pesky internal electrically induced dimension hop, most likely to the dimension closest to our visible one.

  17. Jeremy_Wells responds:

Shot on April 1st (April fools day) by Lem Burger (limburger, the stinky cheese) and her friends the “Smiths” and Jack Sprat (who apparently ate just enough fat to fuel his day of skiing?)… add in that it was uploaded, as you note, March 31 and it screams practical joke before I even watch the video. Then I watch that and I see a blob in a snowsuit floundering about in the background and the “reporter” stating it is April 1, 2007 (but uploaded the day before). It’s all very suspect.

Funny, because I think there could be the same “spotted owl” effect if the species ever were identified, but not too impressive as far as “proof” of sasquatch.

  18. Mnynames responds:

    Mothman said “SOMEONE BEHEADED BIGFOOT!!”

It was Yeti. “There can be only one!”

  19. tapper responds:

You must be joking, right? Does anyone on here know of Hollywood’s marketing gimmicks? Go to Wolf Creek.

Look at the release date. How funny that the release date for this particular DVD falls around the same time this video was released.

Having seen a squatch in motion and plenty of tracks in the snow, I’m offended by this video. They move nothing like this in the snow. Nothing, whatsoever.

  20. mrbf2007 responds:

Actually, Ceroil, Claude Rains WAS in “The Wolf Man” (1941) as Lon Chaney’s father. He did indeed play the title role in “The Invisible Man” as well.

  21. otonabee responds:

With the name game being played and the acting so over the top I am left wondering why the word hoax has been used so often in the comments.

When I think of the word hoax it brings to mind a deliberate attempt at deceiving others.

The only thing deliberate about this is its satire.

Full marks to the makers of this short film although it has left me scratching my head over the reason it was made.

Is this a new comedy troop trying to catch a break , or perhaps one of those viral films meant to advertise an upcoming movie?

Or maybe just a one-off shot for a few laughs.

  22. bill green responds:

hey everyone interesting new article about the colorado sasquatch & interesting very questionable possible filmfootage could be real or hoax. more research study etc. thanks bill green

  23. MattBille responds:

Reminds me of the “snow-walker” Yeti hoax, the way the critter sumbles around in the snow.

Colorado Wild and the environmental issues are real, but the group’s website says nothing (not surprisingly) about sasquatch.

  24. cabochris responds:

I find it rather interesting, that we the general public interested in Bigfoot, are able to collectively debunk a Sasquatch video, with a high degree of certainty. In this case Bigfoot looks good, but also like someone in a gorilla suit. There is a sense of things being “Staged”. The fact that this report seems funny is a dead giveaway. I do not think the discovery of Bigfoot would be humorous in any way. The folks in the video seem like actors, including the reporter.

This seems more like some sort of school project. A test to produce a hoax? To try and slow/stop a development seems a silly notion. Unless they actually captured clear and close detailed video of Bigfoot, surely they would have to know a second rate film, would get them nowhere? Too bad.

It is good to know that perhaps when a real Bigfoot video comes along, we the jury will give it a “Thumbs Up”. As a group, I feel our judgement tends to stand correct, and is a good basis to come to conclusions.

  25. Brocktune responds:

FarmHead Bunmunch? His Mother must have Knew his true calling.

  26. proriter responds:

    > “This is Mr. & Mrs. Smith from Madison, Wisconsin. . . .”

    > “Oh my God!”

    >”It’s walking on two legs!”

    Typical internet candy for suckers.

  27. Cryptonut responds:

    One word….. LAME!

  28. cryptonerd responds:

Looks like the vid was posted by Bill Hudson, whose YouTube profile describes a “workaholic who likes to have a good laugh now and then” and whose occupation is listed as “artist, writer, web publisher, video producer”.

You can find the original story in the news archives at http://www.pagosadailypost.com, http://www.fourcornersdailypost.com, and http://www.bayfielddailynews.com, listed under “Humor” for the date 4/1/07.

The environmental issue is a real one. There is a group called “Colorado Wild” (http://www.coloradowild.org/) & (http://www.friendsofwolfcreek.org/) which has been fighting development of a “village” at Wolf Creek Ski Area for several years now.

  29. mystery_man responds:

So are we to believe that sightings can’t happen on April Fool’s Day? And the horrible acting could be explained by extreme duress. So…., ahhh this video ridiculous. Well, at least this hoax was funny. The way the guy says “Yesss!” and pumps his arms in the air is classic.

  30. sasdave responds:

Good try hoaxers. Bad acting and arms and legs to short. With the screaming idiot you can bet no sasquatch would be waiting to get his image shot; especially, at that time of day. The sasquatch has more brain then all of the pink monkeys shown on this video. Were these people let out of their rubber rooms, cause that’s where they belong.

  31. DARHOP responds:

I know this is fake but… If I just saw a squatch, I’d be jumping around for joy high fiving who was ever with me at the time.

  32. Mike Smith responds:

    And the Oscar goes to……

  33. Savage30L responds:

Please don’t waste our time with this stuff.

  34. arbigfoothunter responds:

Yes, I agree with all of you on this one–hoax! But one thing different with this one–I enjoyed watching the video and did not get upset with the fact that it was obviously faked and even rehearsed (more than likely). It was one of those “fun videos” for me. The only thing that irks me is that these hoaxers are probably sitting back laughing at us, while reading our comments. But do they know how much we are laughing to ourselves while watching these?? But, even so, I love reading these articles and watching these videos on this website as much as I enjoy reading the monthly sightings updates on the BFRO website. Kind of the same feeling I get each Wednesday night when watching my favorite show, A&E’s The Sopranos!!

  35. bccryptid responds:

No human on this Earth would ever run TOWARDS an actual sasquatch. He looks like he’s trying to act like the Crocodile Hunter!

    I can almost hear him:

    ‘CRIKEY! SHE’S A BEUTE!!!”

    Completely blown by horrific acting.

  36. kenneyvg responds:

    absolutely horrible…

  37. MT. HOOD HUNTERS responds:

    2nd picture
    Looks like a male.

The blurred face, this happens when you take a picture and the subject shakes it’s head from side to side every thing else is clear and not the face.

Sorry. Comments have been closed.
