In case you’re around and want to come along, I’ll be speaking at the annual Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant, West Virginia on the weekend of Sept 20-21.

The subject of my lecture: Mothman-style creatures in the UK, such as the red-eyed, feathery Owlman of Mawnan, Cornwall; the flying man of the Cannock Chase woods; the winged fiend that brought terror to the county of Kent, England in the early 1960s; sightings of strange and sinister “bird-men;” and – also of relevance to the Mothman saga – bizarre beasts seen in the vicinity of old bridges.

Here’s the link to the official website of the Mothman Festival.

I find it odd that the only factual event related to the “Mothman” mythos that is known to have taken place, is the death of 46 people during the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967. What must the survivors and families of this tragedy think about a Groundhog’s Day type celebration every year around this occurrence in West Virginia. Have the revelers made a disconnect with this event lest it spoil the fun? Strange indeed.
How many people know that after Gray Barker wrote “The Silver Bridge” linking UFOs, Mothman sightings and the tragic collaspe in 1970. In 1975, impoverished author John Keel got the mythos ball rolling by inventing an entire paranormal event around sightings and injecting himself and his whole-cloth alter reality musings to invent the Mothman universe which continues to this day.
