The mainstream media seem unable to publish an article about cryptozoology without sneaking in side issues, scopticisms, and silliness in the stories. Yet articles like the following appear with little hint that this might involve a “hunters’ tales” or some other kind of reality:

A ‘super pack’ of wolves has been terrifying a town after leaving more than 30 horses dead in just four days.
Four hundred bloodthirsty wolves have been spotted prowling around the edges of Verkhoyansk, in Russia, attacking livestock at will.

Twenty four teams of hunters have been put together to get rid of the wolves, with a bounty of £210 for every wolf skin brought to officials.

Stepan Rozhin, an administration official for the Verkhoyansk district in Russia, said: ‘To protect the town we are creating 24 teams of armed hunters, who will patrol the neighbourhood on snowmobiles and set wolf traps.

‘But we need more people. Once the daylight increases, the hunters will start shooting predators from helicopters.’

A pack of wolves this size is unheard of, with the animals usually preferring to hunt in smaller groups of just six or seven.
The massive group is believed to be made from hundreds of packs and has left animal experts baffled.

Things could be worse. Someone looking for publicity could be on site.

Can we take up a collection to not kill the wolves?

Verkhoyansk is the third smallest town in Russia with only 1400 or so people as of 2002. The article claims only 1300. Maybe these people can be paid to take a train to Moscow and get real jobs.

  2. David-Australia responds:

Interesting, but was first news in Australia more than 2 weeks ago.

  3. mungofoot responds:

wow!!! who came up with this story? Is Biscardi taking up residence there now?

  4. aargeee responds:

    Hmmm,

It seems very unlikely, a pack of four hundred?!

How will the alpha male and female control it??
    They most likely can’t…
It’s also very unlikely these are hundreds of packs, because wolves are fierce competitors and will kill a member from another pack if given the chance.

Also this giant pack has to have a steady source of food. The wolves will have to be on the move all of the time, so why are they not noticed earlier.

But Maybe just maybe they made an evolutionary leap and learned that working together pays of.
Next year someone will find the first chickens which are domesticated by wolfs 🙂

It would be cool though if it’s true. It will mean we’re far from understanding these animals from which we think we know so much. If this goes, i think we’ll have to reconsider or question many things…

    @pgb7112000

What is a real job according to you?

  5. Bigfootfinder responds:

A Pack of Wolves that equals 400 thats alot.
I thought a a Pack of Wolves maxed out around 150 or 200.

  6. wolfman1 responds:

Not 395, not 402 wolves. Man it must suck to be on ‘team Edward’ right now. It is sure obvious that these must be warewolves. It’s a slam dunk.
They were on a training exercise. These are all ex-russian military soldiers converted by medical experiments. They couldn’t afford to pay them, so they gave them something so they only have to work for food.
Is that 210 english pounds or russian lira? I never get those symbols right. If it’s lira, that’s like $2. It doesn’t even cover the cost of the ammo. If it’s pounds, that’s like $280 US. Hell, I’ll fly there and let’s start ‘a shootin’.
