Chicago-Area Black Panther Sighting

Wheaton, Illinois police received a report on 9/11/09 of a 60-pound-plus black cat sighting at a park a week ago, the department said in a statement.

The sighting occurred at about dusk Sept. 4 when a woman who was running with her dog in Northside Park near the bridge area saw a large, black cat that was larger than her 60-pound dog. Her dog approached the cat, which fled into a nearby wooded area.

Deputy Chief Tom Meloni said the woman “grew up out west” and knows what a cougar looks like.

He said she had not planned to report the sighting, but did so after talking to friends.

Police have not received any other reports corroborating this sighting or reports of other sightings. They advised anyone who spots a cougar or similar wild feline to call 911.

Northside Park is largely surrounded by homes but also connects to the nearby Lincoln Marsh.
