io9’s Summer Preview Picks Cryptozoology Stop

Posted by: Loren Coleman on April 29th, 2012

Lauren Davis of io9 (“We Come From The Future”) has picked their top Summer 2012 sites for “roadside attractions, unusual museums, and significant spots from science and science fiction from all across the US and Canada for the ultimate scifi road trip.”

Of course, we have to disagree with our being labeled as “scifi,” but it is good to be mentioned, nevertheless.

The article begins in the Northeast, with this: “Starting way out on the East Coast, our first roadside attraction is the Giant Squid in Glover’s Harbor, Newfoundland, a life-sized model of a squid that landed in the harbor in 1878 and is the largest giant squid on record. As we travel down into New England, we can swing by the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine, a tiny but unique collection of cryptid paraphernalia and lore.”

Of course, we don’t think of ourselves as “tiny,” any longer, after moving into a new space in November 2011, which is about 6 times larger than our former location. But, hey, being on the list is half the battle, right?

The International Cryptozoology Museum is enhancing itself every week. One of our newest art additions is “A Bigfoot family visits a human family’s campsite,” a 3D piece by Alec Cloud McPherson. We appreciate and celebrate this donation, for it is quite engaging, creative, and humorous.

Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.
