There is more news detailing the Mammoth Hoax, originally discussed here and here.

Michael Cohen responded to Ludovic Petho’s claims (via Huffington Post) by sending in an email: “I just looked at this footage and all it proves is that someone filmed the same spot at another time. While this new revelation does open up the prospect that this might well be a hoax at this stage, it is not conclusive and might simply be a case of the same spot being filmed twice.”

Using a frequent technique in deceptive responses, Cohen never addressed the question on the table, but instead used distraction in his followup.

“I was only given sketchy details regarding this footage,” Cohen added. “And it is interesting to note that if, indeed, a mammoth was filmed, it occurred in the Irkutsk region — an area of intense paranormal activity.”

Blake Smith, the skeptic known as “Doctor Atlantis,” is going to post an interview with Petho on Wednesday, but in the meantime, he has the following on YouTube.

Blake Smith writes me: “What my video does is demonstrate that Cohen is wrong about this alternate interpretation. I identified that the video Cohen used comes from 1:09 to 1:19 in the Petho video. There is zero chance that identical water patterns would come back even in the extremely unlikely event that Cohen’s source had managed to line up the shot exactly the same. (Of course Cohen’s video had motion added – but with a motion stabilization applied it is clear that this is exactly the same video.) So I think this video does add something to the body of evidence which turns Cohen’s video from a possible hoax to 100% certainly hoaxed. I’m sure you know how much we skeptics hate to use the word ‘certain.’ 😉 Anyway, it is out there if you want to link to it. Your readers might or might not find it of interest.”

  1. Cryptoraptor responds:

Given that Michael Cohen believes Ludovic Petho’s evidence that he (Cohen) misappropriated Petho’s video “is not conclusive and might simply be a case of the same spot being filmed twice” will he now take legal action against Ludovic Petho for defamation?

  2. David-Australia responds:

Did Cryptoraptor not read the last paragraph???

  3. Cryptoraptor responds:

Does David-Australia not understand sarcasm? 😉

  4. ModernShanahan responds:

It’s so sad that it’s a hoax. I looked and looked at the video. The same waves as the original video… Glad to see that. At first, I thought two different guys filmed the same location and the one guy that claims that it’s his video, was in fact trying to stir trouble. But it looks like that wasn’t the case. All these hoaxes are giving us believers a bad name and having people not believe! Sucks though….. Sucks what us humans are capable of when it comes to making a fool out of us.

  5. HarryHenderson responds:

Wonderful!!! The Social Media gears are grinding and everyone is eating into it. This is ultimately advertising to Ludovic Petho’s upcoming documentary.

Well done Ludovic. I look forward to your documentary. The HD footage of that part of Siberia is stunning. When and where will it be released or available for digital download?

Now days, if you want free advertising, or exposure…this is the way to do it. Remember the Montauk(sp?) Monster that Washed up on shore. Those gents got famous for the Fx make-up design…they’re probably are gainfully employed now too.

I smell a fish….a nice HD Filmed fish albeit.

    Regards,

  6. David-Australia responds:

Yes, but that one was obviously too subtle.

  7. DWA responds:

“And it is interesting to note that if, indeed, a mammoth was filmed, it occurred in the Irkutsk region — an area of intense paranormal activity.”

Yep, that’ll cinch it every time. An area of intense paranormal activity? Then that’s gotta be a mammoth!

(Unless it’s a mastodon, which it looks more like to me.)

Kids, pull out your Dr. DWA Secret Debunker rings. Microscribed on the inside: Dr. DWA CryptoTyps! And here’s Typ #75 in case your fiche reader is on the fritz.

CRYPTOTYP #75: ALWAYS ASK “WHAT IS THE ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE?”

Mammoth poop is huge. So are their tusks and skeletal parts. Yes, these latter turn up from time to time…and are always dated “Ice Age.”

If there’s nothing else but this video…NEXT!
