Lake Ontario Monster Chases Pair

Posted by: Loren Coleman on April 18th, 2007

The Oswego Palladium reports that Leroy Johnson and his son, Orville, of R.D. 6, Oswego, report seeing a medium-sized sea serpent in the water of Lake Ontario off Nine Mile creek, last week. The supposed sea serpent looked like a large snake. The senior Johnson was fishing in the lake and had waded out to knee depth when he saw the serpent and he immediately beat it for shore. The animal chased him for some distance and then disappeared.Fulton [New York] Patriot, June 23, 1920

Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

Lake monster, medium sized in the mind of the seer, perhaps 10 to 15 ft.

  2. Ceroill responds:

I find it curious that the syntax leaves it vague whether it followed him onto the land or never left the water.

  3. Fred Facker responds:

I was fishing in the boundary waters once, and we had all our fish on a stringer tied to a tree sitting in the water. Out of nowhere this serpent/fish/torpedo thing zoomed in grabbed a fish off our stringer and took off. We were all completely taken off guard and freaked out for a minute discussing what it was and the initial size estimate was 6 or 7 feet long. However, being the curious investigatory types, we left the stringer in the water and backed off a little to see if it would return for the free fish. The second time it hit there was still some debate as to what kind of animal it was, but by the third time it came back it had slowed down and was easily identifiable as an otter. In fact, after it grabbed that third fish instead of disappearing it just kind of hung out swimming around looking at us for a while.

I often wonder how many stories like this could just be misidentified animals that most people aren’t familiar with.

  4. DreamKeeper responds:

It’s nice to have a sighting, but I think this leaves me with more questions than answers

  5. silvereagle responds:

The “it disappeared” observation, should not be underestimated as to it’s true meaning, nor forgotten.

  6. shumway10973 responds:

Don’t you just hate it when the medium sized sea serpents chase you out of the water? As far as I’m concerned, if this man wasn’t too well versed in the exotic snakes like boas or anachondas, this could have been one that escaped and just wanted to give the first person it saw a great big hug.

  7. shovethenos responds:

Sounds a lot like this case.

And there’s even a picture to back it up.
