Rumor: Bigfoot Shot At Pine Ridge

Posted by: Loren Coleman on August 6th, 2006

Did some kill a Bigfoot in the land of the Lakota?

One of the reasons I don’t like forums is that their unnamed sources serve as excellent avenues for people to start rumors and not take any responsibility for them. Nevertheless, even though the early reaction to the one I am going to mention is unprintable here, I’ll pass along this breaking story coming out of the Pine Ridge Reservation just in case it might indicate something (different) has occurred there.

At the uniquely-named Godlike Productions forum tonight, someone only identified as “ac10 User ID: 100409” wrote in on August 5, 2006, with this rumor, below (without any corrections):

I just talked to my sister in law who’s on the Pine Ridge Reservation. She said that last Tuesday night supposedly someone shot and killed a bigfoot near the Slim Buttes area. THis is basically insider gossip, as there is no way to verify it. But, she said that several medicine men including Wilmer Mesteth, Oliver Red Cloud and Tom(?) Janis were called over there by the police to the site, and they smudged the body with burning sage and cedar, and said prayers. (The lakota see the bigfoot as a sort of spirit being, and are scared of it.) Anyway, then it was wrapped up and taken to the lab at the School of Mines in Rapid City. All kind of hush hush, but this is the inside gossip. I have no way to verify it, but my sister in law has never lied to me. She said she doesn’t know if it’s true as she hasn’t spoken to anyone who actually saw it. But I just thought you would be interested to hear the rumors.

The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology is located at 501 East Saint Joseph Street, Rapid City, South Dakota. I will be contacting them tomorrow (no one seems to be around tonight) to ask them if they have a Bigfoot they are examining. If the names of the Medicine Men are real, they will be contacted too. If anyone knows anything more about this rumor or why it is being floated around, please make contact.

(For those that did not know, I am part Eastern Band Cherokee and I will take great care with the First Nations’ elements of this developing story, which might not be fully appreciated by some. See here for info on the smudging ceremony.)

Past recent accounts from the Oglala Nation’s South Dakota location – first documented at Cryptomundo – have involved a road report, police sightings, a Bigfoot peering into houses, and other encounters at Pine Ridge.

Once again Loren good job on this breaking news. This could be the breakthrough that will prove once and for all bigfoot is real. All we have to do is get over to the lab. Thats probably impossible though this could be another cover up.

  2. bill green responds:

hey loren your very welcome for this new breaking news.

  3. Illuvatar responds:

    crypto_randz,

Why would anyone want to do a cover up? You said another cover up do you have evidence that there were other cover ups?

I’m scared that it’s just a rumor and there is no legitimacy to it. Can’t wait to hear more.

  4. ufosrhere responds:

I am also eager to hear about the follow-up! Thanks Loren!

  5. Judy Green responds:

Awaiting “the rest of the story,” Loren, thanks!

  6. AnxiousMoFo responds:

I’ve been a reader/AC poster at Godlike ever since Kent Steadman started the first version of the forum at cyberspaceorbit.com. Enjoyed the insanity when Elaine owned the board all the way to it’s current owners.

Be VERY cautious regarding posts on the site. The Aussie Bloke controversy started on that board and there are still posters who refuse to believe that it was all made up. The reigning mood there is doom and gloom with a seemingly weekly procession of end of the world predictions.

    Caveat emptor.

  7. Ole Bub responds:

    Much Obliged Loren….

Everything you have posted here has been consistent conceptually with my knowledge of and experience with the Lakota Nation…

I agree with the premise these creatures may be fleeing the wildfires and drought… alas only to be mortally wounded…literally from the frying pan into the fire…

If true…this is a tragic and regretable event…another Wounded Knee…JMHO

    seeing is believing….

  8. sschaper responds:

someone might want first publishing rights, though.

  9. Xeno2814 responds:

*Shrug* Intriguing, but I find myself distrusting the story so long as it remains something only posted on a message board. That, and I would hate to find out Sasquatch exists by looking at his dead body plastered all over the news. And I shudder at the subsequent hunt through the area around the reservation for any other ones that might exist…

    …Huh. I’m in a pessimistic mood tonight, aren’t I?

  10. crypto_randz responds:

Yes there has been other supposedly captured bigfoots in the past that I have read. How about when there are forest fires in california from what I have read firemen have seen bodies of ape like creatures that have been burned and there was one story that had firemen recovered abody that was badly burned in which the animal was still alive. They were able to take the body to an undisclosed location.

  11. crypto_randz responds:

Bigfoot is a debatable subject, there is so much information about this unique specimen. Does it exist only time will tell.

  12. greywolf responds:

Well what ever happens I hope they have real pictures. Also if a BF was killed that is a shame I would rather have found the truth another way.

  13. Craig Woolheater responds:

crypto_randz is referencing the story that I covered here on Cryptomundo last November concerning the Bigfoot that was supposedly injured in a forest fire in Nevada in 1999.

  14. P.S.Anderson responds:

There are several reasons why our government alone would cover up the existance of Bigfoot. Also, if one has been shot, unless it was in self-defense, charges should be brought against that individual.

  15. TemplarKnight21c responds:

I’m kind of torn on this one, fellas. While I would LOVE to see unconditional proof, I would just as soon not see it if the poor thing has to be killed for it. My money is on rumor/hoax, but…I dunno.

  16. sasquatch responds:

    Yeah, I read of a guy in Louisiana who killed one, called LSU, and the anthropology Dept. came and got the body. When he called them up a while later to see what they’d determined about it, they said they didn’t know what he was talking about. And the one where bigfoot bodies were piled up after Mt. St. Helens and wisked away by some government agency. And ones where “bear trouble” was the official explanation of campers killed by bigfoot. The Air Force suppoosedly has surveillance footage of these creatures etc…Are the stories true or just stories? I wonder what the reasoning would be behind keeping their existence a secret? Here’s a few that come to mind;

To keep people from shooting at Bipedal creatures in the woods-could be people (Good reasoning).

Not wanting to scare people away from vacationing in Natl. Parks-A source of revenue for the Government.

This discovery would embarass everyone who’s ever laughed at the idea.

This discovery would throw a “Monkey Wrench” (HEE HEE) into evolutionary theory and embarass that whole crowd, public education, textbooks etc.

The discovery would throw light on how little we really know about anything, thus embarrasing everyone who claims to know it all.

This discovery could make people re-consider the possibility of UFO’s and other anomalous subjects ands that’s always a pain in the governments backside.

Just a few, does anyone else have any more to add?

  17. Tobar responds:

P.S. Anderson, while I don’t like the idea of anyone shooting a bigfoot I don’t see how anyone could be brought up on charges. They’re not human beings so there’s no chance of a murder charge. As well, Sasquatch are not recognized as an endangered species as they’re not a recognized species.

  18. Illuvatar responds:

I read the post from last November and I stand corrected. I suppose it is possible that the government could be trying to keep it covered up. But I have my reservations. If someone came public with a body no one could hide it. Can’t wait to hear more about this.

  19. Illuvatar responds:

Actually, Tobar, I heard about state putting a ten-thousand dollar fee and also five years in jail to anyone who shot a BF.

  20. Ole Bub responds:

    Sasquatch….

The potential impact of endangered species status on habitat conservation…could have far reaching implications on the Timber and Mining industry. Personally I think there is room for both…let common sense prevail…JMHO

They perform autopsies on stacks of sasquatch bodies in Roswell….under a crop circle….”Cereal Supernatural Surgery Center”….just follow the “spook light”.

    seeing is believing…

    ole bub and the dawgs

  21. HowieYowie responds:

I don’t understand why police would take such a body to a lab in the School of Mines, Rapid City. The Rapid City General Hospital Laboratory is just around the corner from the School of Mines.

I also don’t understand why police would invite medicine men to attend a humanlike corpse before a coroner had determined its identity.

Of course, the police department could be giving its officers courses in Bigfoot identification…

That’s apart from the story coming to us fifth-hand: Loren the Loquacious Co-ordinator of this forum

  22. Ole Bub responds:

All the more reason to have a capture/recovery protocol….if you deliver a body to a lab….seems logical to have ALL the national media accompany you….be sure to ask for a receipt…JMHO

    No bucks…No bigfoot…

    ole bub and the dawgs

  23. Harpo responds:

For what it’s worth, a quick check on the Switchboard site does list an address and phone number for two of the three names mentioned in the original posting – not that necessarily means anything one way or the other.

  24. Sky King responds:

    # P.S.Anderson Says:
    August 6th, 2006 at 11:02 pm

“Also, if one has been shot, unless it was in self-defense, charges should be brought against that individual.”

Charges for WHAT, killing a “mythical creature”? There’s no jurisdiction in the country that would charge someone for killing a BF. You can’t outlaw killing what isn’t supposed to exist.

  25. Sky King responds:

    sasquatch Says:

“…This discovery could make people re-consider the possibility of UFO’s and other anomalous subjects ands that’s always a pain in the governments backside.

Just a few, does anyone else have any more to add?”

Well, that’s exactly it. Proof of BF would cast the entire “scientific” paradigm into doubt, cast hundreds of thousands of careers into the hopper. People have been killed for a LOT less than that!

Just a notion, but could (captured) BF’s have been inculcated into some sort of military program, like the admitted attempts to develop “super-soldiers”?

  26. Sky King responds:

    Illuvatar Says:

If someone came public with a body no one could hide it. Can’t wait to hear more about this.

No, but they could be prevented from “coming public” via threats and intimidation. Or money. If government agencies have a stake in keeping BF under wraps, they could certainly be expected to protect their stake, by any means necessary (sorry, Malcolm!),

  27. Craig Woolheater responds:

Illuvatar is referencing the Skamania County WA ordinance. The penalties and fines were reduced in 1984 when the ordinance was partially repealed and amended, as I posted here on Cryptomundo last December.

  28. moregon responds:

Tobar are you sure they’re not human? I’m assuming you mean they aren’t specifically homo sapiens. Not everyone subscribes to the idea that they are an ape. And what would the law do, if this has happened, and evidence came in proving they were a form of human? Would the first death be a gimmie and laws changed, or would there be a movement to press charges of at least manslaughter?

Hard to make a call on this one with the amount of evidence so far, will be looking forward to hearing more.

  29. pteroophia responds:

Fingers crossed this is true although I don’t condone the shooting

  30. muskrat responds:

Some kid wrote something to freak out his friends.

  31. kscryptoholic responds:

With all the gun nuts running around in the woods shooting anything that moves, it wouldn’t surprise me that bigfoots have been killed or wounded in the past. Untrained and unprincipled hunters will kill anything, for instance, endangered species, like the jerk in Texas that shot a whooping crane for grins. I hope this story is not true. Any one that could kill a bigfoot, unless in self defense, could easily kill another person, in my opinion. Most hunters I know would never let lose a shot at an unknown creature, but would marvel in the experience and priviledge of seeing such a rare and retiring creature.

  32. sschaper responds:

Dollars to doughnuts (hmm, there is a phrase inflation has changed) it is a rumor, and didn’t happen.

If it did, and comes to light, I cannot imagine how it could throw any careers into the dumpster or anything like that.

Neither neo-Darwinians, ID modelers or Creationists are going to have a serious problem encorporating another ape into their models. Even if an unusually intelligent one.

How many animals now have we found have what is properly called language? Self-awareness, emotions the same as ours, problem-solving abilities? Not just primates, but African Grey parrots and a Pacific raven, toothed cetacians, cheruvim and seraphim, and I wouldn’t rule out any omnivorous or carnivorous placentals. There is so much we don’t know that has been ignored due to mechanistic presuppositions and prejudices against ‘native’ peoples – including 1st world farmers that actually have significant contact animals.

So if it happened, I cannot imagine it would be suppressed for long. Maybe a year or so and a paper appears in Nature, at the longest.

Of course, if it was an outlaw biker on his way to Sturgis. . .

  33. Mausinn responds:

OK, it’s been almost a week that this supposedly happened and no one has heard anything previously about the event. Yet some folks on a chat forum have the inside info told by a friend of a friend of a friend, etc.? I’m not holding out much hope of this going anywhere. I think someone somewhere is really chuckling about this one. How many unsubstantiated reports of kills and captures have we all seen? But then I guess one has to check them all out to see if my chance the next one may be a real report. Good luck Loren, your a man of great patience and fortitude. My hat is off to you sir.

  34. Dark-Obsessor responds:

Very interesting. Could be real, then again it may not be. We’ll have to wait and see.

And Illuvatar, I love the name. From Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, correct?

  35. shovethenos responds:

I’m not so sure that someone who shot a Bigfoot couldn’t be charged. I’m not sure of the game laws, but basically to kill an animal it has to be a game species within a prescribed season. (Generally not during the summer.) Some states have “varmint” species that can be taken at any time, but a Bigfoot isn’t recognized so it definitely isn’t listed as either a game or varmint species. So there is a possibility that they can be charged with some form of poaching. Then you have various firearm offenses that are possibilities as well. Then you have the animal cruelty laws, depending on how those are worded.

As far as possible motives for a government cover-up of Bigfoot existence, the “super-soldier” scenario would probably be the most likely. The Soviets were doing work in this area, and we often carried out research parallel to theirs if we were aware of it. (And would probably carry out research like that even if we weren’t.)

  36. P.S.Anderson responds:

    Sky King and Tobar-

Hominid and homicide. I see the connection.

  37. Dark-Obsessor responds:

But at the same time, I would shoot one, perhaps not to kill but to injure, to get proof. I think. I’m not sure if I could.

However, they should not and probably would not (if sasquatch ended up being real) press charges for shooting the first one. They kind of can’t consider it homicide because, with many exceptions, it is not human. They could pass laws of protection, but not manslaughter laws against the murder of them.

  38. Mr. Capalini responds:

I live in the Pine Ridge area, and I’ve heard some similar but different rumors pertaining to this time period.

I know one of the medicine men mentioned on that message board, when I get a chance I’ll ask him about it. I also know one of the officers that witnessed the big foot sighting in Pine Ridge village.

Has anyone ever taken into account that big foot might possess some of the same characteristics of a chameleon, which is why he is so elusive?

Sorry. Comments have been closed.
