X-Files Monsters Return

Ten years after the last “X-Files” movie hit theaters, the team behind the hit sci-franchise is tossing out some tidbits about the sequel, currently scheduled for release on July 25, 2008.

The film, which has not yet been named, will mark the return of David Duchovny as Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Scully, two FBI agents who investigate the paranormal.

It is being directed by Chris Carter, creator of the series that ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002.

“I know what I want it to be, but Fox has ideas of their own,” Carter said of the title. “I know what it should be.”

What he and co-writer Frank Spotnitz did reveal this week during the 25th annual William S. Paley Television Festival, was the trailer [appearances of it on YouTube have all been withdrawn]. It featured lots of snow, running, a large syringe and a helicopter.

The film will pick up six years after the end of the series. It’s supposed to be a standalone feature removed from the alien mythology of the TV show, a throwback to the show’s “monster of the week” episodes.

Still, some lingering aspects from the series, like whether Scully’s child will be a normal tyke, will be addressed.

“It will not be a mythology movie, but it’s true to everything that’s come before,” said Spotnitz.

hey everyone im realy looking forward to go seeing the x files movie sequel this year definetly. thanks bill 🙂

  2. Lyndon responds:

Cool. I’m glad there is no ‘alien’ story in this one. That was what largely turned me off X Files.

  3. eireman responds:

I liked the Alien Mythology in the X-Files but it did tend to wander, go off track, repeat itself, and contradict – but more than anything, it was the complete lack of ANY resolution. That’s why I stopped watching LOST; viewers just get jerked around season after season. That said, I’m glad this will be a stand alone film. The stand alone eps were always my favorites and if they go back to the same energy they had when the show first started, I think this will be an excellent film. But they will have to address some questions left unanswered by the series finale. I greatly look forward to this. It’s odd how a slew of really anticipated films can come out in one summer while other years we starve for anything worth watching…

  4. plant girl responds:

I cant wait until it comes out. I still watch reruns of the X-files on tv.

  5. shumway10973 responds:

Well, we will see. Duchovny got to the point where Fox is the only character he can to well. Just about everything else I saw him do wasn’t that great. I hope this one is worth it. I wonder which monster they will have this time…?

  6. Fayble responds:

If only I ever watched X-files. Its just hard when Chuck Norris is a few channels away.

  7. Lupus responds:

    @ Lyndon:

Agreed. The first few seasons of the X-files were great, featuring a lot of the well known (and some less known) ”monsters” out there. The continious alien-thread became a bit of a drag.

  8. Lyndon responds:

    Lupus,

Certainly. I loved the first few seasons. One of my favourites was the PNW set episode with the glowing bugs killing off the loggers in the Olympic National Park. Another favourite was the Indian Werewolf episode.

As so often happens (eireman also mentioned Lost, which I also got tired of) good things never last, sadly.

  9. Lupus responds:

    Lyndon,

True, unfortunately. Still, they could’ve tried. Another show into the paranormal, Psi-factor, managed to have more balanced episodes, basically covering a lot of creatures and phenomena. It did only last for 4 seasons and it’s not as well known as X-Files, but it’s really quite good.

  10. cryptidsrus responds:

Never was a huge fan of the X-FIles but I am looking forward to the movie.

    SHUMWAY10973:

I agreed with your assessment of Duchovny until I saw CALIFORNICATION on HBO. Check it out. It might change your mind.

I DO think he is SO identified with the character of FOX MULDER that some people will see him in nothing else.
    Unfortunately.

He WAS kind of fun in EVOLUTION, though.

  11. Maine Crypto responds:

Wow, I am sooo excited! The X-Files is one of my all time favorite shows. I am going to see this on the big screen for sure! I am only glad that they got the original actors as well as Chris Carter. Although the last season was okay, after you change the original format to a great show, it just isn’t so great any more. My favorite episode was the one with the flesh eating bugs in the woods I think it was season one or two and it was called Darkness Falls.

  12. red_pill_junkie responds:

    Gillian Anderson is HOT 😉

  13. Scaramouche responds:

I can’t believe that nobody’s mentioned the episode with Charles Nelson Reilly. That one was special.

  14. gridbug responds:

“I know what I want it to be, but Fox has ideas of their own,” Carter said of the title.”

Because nothing says “I care” more than good old-fashioned studio interference. X-Files: File Harder With A Vengeance, anyone? *slaps forehead*

Actually, I’m really looking forward to this. Though for me, the series officially ended when Fox was reunited with a spectral Samantha on that hilltop to the heartbreaking sound of Moby’s “My Weakness”. I wept openly, and aren’t ashamed to admit it. 🙂

  15. crgintx responds:

It will be great to see Mulder and Scully at it again. It’s too bad that Doggett, Skinner and Reyes won’t be in the movie. Maybe they’ll do cameos. The alien mythology story had gotten old but I think some folks missed the point that Carter was trying to make. The Paranormal including Cryptozoology and Parapolitical aren’t necessarily separate or unrelated. The sightings of Bigfoot and other mysterious creatures often occur in areas known for ghosts, ufo’s and other unusual activity. The Big Thicket area in Texas is very well known for all sorts of strange activity not just Bigfoot. Carter tried to very hard to show the link in Season 1&2 but only a few of the hardcore fans caught on to what he was trying to say. I can’t recall the episode but I remember one of the first episodes mentioning the Shadow gov’t years before Dick Cheney acknowledged its existence. My favorite creature episode was actually Doggett’s batboy episode.

  16. MattBille responds:

All cryptozoologists, I think, will always have a soft spot for the Lake Heuvelmans episode, even if the monster’s normal diet of frogs seemed very inadequate.
