Intrepid sasquatch investigator, Thomas Steenburg and a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) soundman, narrowly escaped with their lives following a road accident over the weekend.
The soundman was working with CBC radio program host Hal Niedzvecki and was venturing out with Thomas and fellow investigator Sebastian Wang, as part of a radio program looking into the activities of the West Coast Sasquatch (WCS) and British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club (BCSCC) joint fieldwork group. The exploration for the day centred on the areas surrounding Harrison Lake and two vehicles were employed. As many Cryptomundo readers know Thomas drives his khaki-coloured Land Rover with his famous Sasquatch Investigations sign on the doors whenever he is out searching for the elusive bipedal hominid of North America.
Unfortunately for Thomas and Paolo the soundman, the vehicle’s steering pin snapped while on the road causing Thomas to lose control. The vehicle skidded all over the roadway before Thomas was able to stop it by judicious use of his brakes. However, the vehicle went down an embankment and stopped thanks to tree stumps that prevented it from going off a cliff.
Neither Thomas nor Paolo were injured, and incredibly they managed to evacuate their vehicle without sending it teetering over the precipice. Sebastian pulled his vehicle up to the edge of the road and attempted to tow the Land rover back from the brink, but to no avail. They finally had to call in a tow truck which retrieved the dangling vehicle and brought it back to Mission where Thomas lives. We hope that the old Land Rover will be repaired and made roadworthy again. Those who say the search for sasquatch is not a sometimes dangerous business should take note of this incident.
Thomas is undeterred by this experience and will resume sasquatching at the next possible opportunity. We wish him good health and the very best of luck.
If you wish to hear the program this is going to appear on, tune into CBC Radio One on the internet at 9:30a.m. on August 3, wherever you are in North America to hear SUBCULTURES. Also on the show will be Paul Leblond, Sebastian Wang and yours truly. The site can be found at www.cbc.ca/listen/
About John Kirk
One of the founders of the BCSCC, John Kirk has enjoyed a varied and exciting career path. Both a print and broadcast journalist, John Kirk has in recent years been at the forefront of much of the BCSCC’s expeditions, investigations and publishing. John has been particularly interested in the phenomenon of unknown aquatic cryptids around the world and is the author of In the Domain of the Lake Monsters (Key Porter Books, 1998).
In addition to his interest in freshwater cryptids, John has been keenly interested in investigating the possible existence of sasquatch and other bipedal hominids of the world, and in particular, the Yeren of China. John is also chairman of the Crypto Safari organization, which specializes in sending teams of investigators to remote parts of the world to search for animals as yet unidentified by science. John travelled with a Crypto Safari team to Cameroon and northern Republic of Congo to interview witnesses among the Baka pygmies and Bantu bushmen who have sighted a large unknown animal that bears more than a superficial resemblance to a dinosaur.
Since 1996, John Kirk has been editor and publisher of the BCSCC Quarterly which is the flagship publication of the BCSCC. In demand at conferences, seminars, lectures and on television and radio programs, John has spoken all over North America and has appeared in programs on NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, TLC, Discovery, CBC, CTV and the BBC.
In his personal life John spends much time studying the histories of Scottish Clans and is himself the president of the Clan Kirk Society. John is also an avid soccer enthusiast and player.
