Lake monsters are reported across America. The Lake Worth community is terrorized by a hybrid man-goat; an aquatic mega monster viciously surfaces from the depths of Lake Pepin; and a giant winged creature emerges from a mine in Iowa.

The Tennessee Valley Authority could use a monster, or the inkling of a monster, right now in Boone Lake, to bring out boaters, explorers, scientists and recreational types.
We could call him Booney. Oh, Booney? Yes, I saw Booney last weekend in the shallow channel of water that sits near the bottom of what is usually Boone Lake. With the atypical drawdown occurring this year while engineers inspect the lake’s dam for possible damage, there needs to be some kind of buzz to get people out on the lake.

The cold, rugged expanses of the northernmost U.S. state of Alaska naturally invite wonder and awe. Here is one of the last truly great wildernesses of North America; a relatively unexplored expanse of unspoiled mountains and ancient forests unfamiliar with the touch of humankind. Tucked within the sweeping vistas of pristine wild expanses is the magnificent Lake Illiamna. Here we are the strangers, merely existing in small settlements, eking out a living on the giant lake’s shores. Extending beyond those shores are the deep waters of one of the largest lakes in the United States and under those waters lurk hulking, dark shapes that cruise below the waves. For here in the far north, in this frigid lake ensconced by boundless wilderness far from modern civilization is the supposed watery domain of one of the most enigmatic and little understood lake monsters in the world.

In communities across America, local legends passed down generation to generation tell of monsters hunting nearby woodlands, ancient spirits walking amongst the living, and alien creatures paying earth a visit. But these aren’t just your scout master’s campfire tales. According to a recent poll conducted by Destination America and Nielsen, more than half of Americans claim to have experienced paranormal activity, whether it’s seeing, hearing, or feeling something they couldn’t explain.* Their stories are told in season two of Destination America’s hit series MONSTERS & MYSTERIES IN AMERICA, premiering Sunday, December 15 at 10/9c. For my first ever Cryptomundo post, I thought it would be fitting to reflect on the Loch Ness mystery for a couple of reasons. First off, it was at age fifteen (back in 1982) that I wandered the shores of the mist-shrouded loch, armed with my little super 8 movie camera in hopes of, capturing footage of a monster. As it turned out, that particular enterprise became an influential event in my life.
