Indie filmmaker picks Parksville
Noel Foley fell into filmmaking — and he’s taking Parksville with him.
The Nanaimo based filmmaker wrapped a show here last year called Squatch.
“That was an adventure,” Foley said.
It used Oceanside locations, including the Skylite Motel, the Island Highway and a Qualicum Foods board room. It stars local actors, including Melanie Peake.
He said he chose Parksville because the City of Nanaimo wasn’t very helpful.
“[Parksville] just threw permits at me,” Foley said.
It was his first foray into film. He wrote, directed and produced the whole show.
“I just did the feature right off the bat,” Foley said.
He didn’t start with anything small like a short film.
“I like making the big film,” Foley said.
“I just decided it was my calling. If you’re going to go, go big.”
He said in an interview that the film was a month from final editing.
Not only did he jump right into movie making, he wrote a the accompanying novel for Squatch. The novel will be sold alongside the DVD.
Squatch is about a group of hikers on an eco tour who wander into Sasquatch territory.
The film will be shown in Parksville in September.
Foley is working on the trailer for his next feature film, a tragic love story called Anna, about two childhood sweethearts, Joe and Anna.
“They were meant for each other, but never quite got together,” Foley said.
The story unfolds from there.
The trailer is used to drum up financing.
Foley plans to market his film through two American websites that deal with independent films.
He said some terrible films on the sites are making really good money.
“Blair Witch got its start there,” Foley added.
