NESSIE will be making her biggest appearance of the year on Hogmanay.
The friendly Loch Ness Monster will be coming ashore to take part in Drumnadrochit’s third Loch Ness Hogmanay Festival Street Party.
Nessie, will kick off the new year’s eve celebrations at 10.30pm by carrying the Hogmanay quaich which will be offered round to all those joining in the festivities.
She will be joined at the street party by The Pipes and Drums of Zurich.
The festival was launched three years ago in 2004 by five women from the village who made a new year’s resolution to organise a massive party.
Three years on the celebrations are going from strength to strength.
Mhairi Moffat, one of the co-ordinators told the Highland News: “We are delighted that we are now in our third year. We never expected that we would still be doing this three years on but it is fantastic. The people of Drumnadrochit really know how to party and we are so happy that everyone has carried on this tradition.”
She added: “This year Nessie has agreed to come out of the water and carry the Quaich for us.
Nessie joins some of the organisers of the Hogmanay street party at Drumnadrochit.
“We have used this Quaich, which is one of four of the biggest in the world, for the last two years, and this year, the company that had been lending it to us have now donated it to us to keep. I think they just really like what we do here.”
The quaich was hand turned in pewter and holds a gallon of liquid.
It is 10 years old and was made by the Glasgow Quaich Company.
The planned festival begins on December 28 and runs right through to January 2.
Events include Highland dancing, Scottish music, fireworks, whisky tastings, shinty and piping.
