What Species of Monkey Attacked?

Posted by: Loren Coleman on February 26th, 2009

Sometimes the breaking news is about broken bones.

A monkey kicked an elderly woman down a six feet (two-meter) deep ditch and seriously injured her during a tour in Emei mountain in Sichuan province, China.

Zhou Changju, 60, from Chongqing, went to the mountain with her family and a monkey jumped on her shoulder.

Zhou was taken to a hospital and doctors said that the woman who weighed only 77 pounds (35 kg) could not bear the monkey’s kicking and suffered broken bones.

Zhou is undergoing tests in the hospital and was talking to the tour operators about compensation.

Of course, I am curious, what species of primate was involved in this encounter?

For that part of China it would be the rather robust Golden Monkey (Pygathrix roxellana). A woman of that age and weight could quite easily be knocked over by accident.

Great. Now one cannot go hiking without a monkey trying to throw you down a cliff.

    “Day of the Animals,” anyone?

…and Leslie Neilsen is nowhere to be found – looks like we’re in for it this time!

Come to think of it, with Hollywood’s current trend of ‘remake EVERYTHING we’ve done before’, I really wouldn’t be surprised to hear about a big-budget version of that movie in production. Environmental scare films always seem to do good business, especially right now.

With the number of ape and monkey ‘attacks’ in the news recently, it would seem an appropriate (if somewhat tasteless) time to remake “In the Shadow of Kilimanjaro”. That could be one hell of a scary movie if someone took the time to film and edit it properly.

  5. Dj Plasmic Nebula responds:

    I say Gorilla

  6. MichaelCraig responds:

Dj…why would a Gorilla be in China? A grasshopper could break this poor little old ladies bones. They are a high risk country for Osteoporosis which makes their bones even more brittle.

That is absolutely the funniest thing that I have read as of late…ha ha ha

The re-make should be called: ” Day of the cryptids”

If they are going to re-make that classic…I thing they should hire Biscardi ….and kill him off first…maybe by a Sasquatch..hell bent on revenge..

    Now that be funny !!

    Thanks Loren !
