Personal Note: Deaths in the Family
Posted by: Loren Coleman on November 21st, 2006
I am going to take a couple days off, here and there, this week, and post when I can on Cryptomundo. I am dealing with the death of my sons’ maternal grandfather (my ex-wife’s father), whom I have known personally, non-stop (despite the divorce), for almost 30 years now.
John Coit Cone, 88, who was a former NH state legislator and had worked with Robert F. Kennedy investigating the Bernard Goldfine-Sherman Adams "Vicuña Coat Affair," died yesterday on RFK’s birthday, after a long battle with cancer.
John Coit Cone always had very Kennedyesque looks, shown here in about 1950.
The Cone family traces their heritage back to Daniel Cone (born 1626) of Edinburgh, Scotland, of the Clan Mackhoe. My thoughts are with the immediate family, my sons, and all their friends, of course, and making myself available to support them.
My condolences also go out to Bill Gibbons, the seeker of Mokele-mbembe, for the recent loss (around November 16th) of his mother, 70, in Scotland. She died suddenly and was found by Bill’s brother on the kitchen floor. How awful.
The Cone funeral is on Sunday, in New Hampshire, due to Thanksgiving.
About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct).
Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015.
Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.
I’m sorry for your loss Loren, and for Mr. Gibbons’s loss as well.
My condolences to you and your family Loren. My Mum died a month ago from cancer – it’s an awful disease. My thoughts are with you.
Well, here is some good news, at least: I was just released from cancer treatment last week by my oncologist. So I’m back on the trail. My documentary is nearly complete and I hope to get copies of it out soon to the participants, including you, Loren.
But for now, sorry for the losses you have suffered. It was the loss of my brother last year that compelled me to take action on this project. My own cancer diagnosis was a stumbling block, but on we go, not just in pursuit of cryptids, but also in pursuit of life.
One question, has anyone any news of Dr. Shelly Williams, the discoverer of the Bili or Bongo Ape that appears to have sasquatch-like behaviors. She was tragically shot in the back by stray gunfire in Atlanta while running errands in 2005. I have tried to track down a clip of the video or photos she took of these creatures but cannot find it anywhere. Any clues?
My sympathies are with you and your family. He sounds like he was quite a remarkable person.

Deeply sorry for your loss Loren. My heart goes out to you and yours. I lost my Dad to cancer in 1979. It really sucked. And I just lost my Mother last May. I know what you and the family are going through. It hurts, but time does heal. Keep your chin up buddy.
Losing someone is always difficult. My condolences to you and you family for your loss.
All the best.
Loren, our thoughts are with you in these tough days. Take the time you need. we’ll be here.
My condolences Loren. I lost my Mom 2 years ago this Christmas. Your family is in my prayers.
Both of my grandfathers died from cancer, so I can understand how you feel. I’m really sorry to hear about your loss as well as Mr. Gibbons’.
Condolences to all concerned from myself and my family.

Condolences, prayers and positive thoughts.
So sorry to hear about your loss, hope your time off is healing.
My condolences, Loren. My sister died last month of cancer, so I have total empathy for you. Just remember they are in a happier place even though we miss them.
Loren, a divorce wouldn’t stop my father-in-law and myself from remaining friends either.
Please accept my sincerest condolences.
My heartfelt condolences Loren at this most difficult of times. I lost a wonderful step-father a few years ago during this time. The wonderful and cherished memories will always be there.
Loren, I lost my mom and my identical twin brother (Valentines Day this year, one day short of 20 years after Mom) to cancer.
I’m really sorry for these losses, and our thoughts are with you and yours.
My sincerest condolences to you Loren and everyone who has posted describing their loss.
If I may be so bold as to try and put a ‘cheery’ face on things at this difficult time, but guess what? If there really is a ‘sweet hereafter’ (and I certainly tend to think there is) then all of our dear departed ones now have the inside scoop on the mysteries discussed here!
I echo all the thoughts above. My sincerest condolences to you, Loren.
Take care, my friend. We are with you.
Lee
