Johor: Gentle Hominid or Boar Killer

Posted by: Loren Coleman on July 17th, 2006

There are various kinds of unknown hairy hominoids seen throughout the world. Unfortunately, despite this diversity, “Bigfoot” has become a universal label for any upright hairy humanlike unknown species. Using the new name “Johor Hominid” makes sense, in an attempt to sort through the confusion. But another wrinkle is behavioral evidence that comes out in visual interpretations.

What image, in the vacuum of these reported photographs, of the Johor Hominid will dominate?

Will it be of a peaceful, yet-to-be discovered, new species, as here portrayed by the extreme example of the Tropi in Skullduggery

Skullduggery

or…the Boar Killer as imagined in this new sketch by Peter Loh based on the emerging information noted by Wei Poh Chin?

Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

  1. jayman responds:

This is getting downright silly. I’m tuning it out until any pictures are published. And I expect a very long wait.

  2. Ole Bub responds:

    Good morning Loren….

Perhaps the Johor critter is a little of both….averaging over 10 feet makes them apt to have some Texan in their genes….LOL

It appears a cottage industry of sasquatchery is imminent…in Johor…

Do they have a “capture protocol”….a “rapid response team”….a toll free number….certainly they need funding….sounds all too familiar to me…JMHO

    seeing is believing…

    ole bub and the dawgs

  3. Digger responds:

I am afraid that Loh’s pictures are not helping this matter whatsoever even though the intentions are valid. Am I the only one who feels this way? IMO it may be best just to wait for the pics instead of drawing silly pictures without value. This pic sadens me. Loh has already proven that his drawing are not even close to what Chow claims to be valid.

  4. One Eyed Cat responds:

Well IF there is a connection as in sub species, BF has reports of killing deer and even cattle sometimes, so boar killing should not be a great surprise

  5. didyouseethat? responds:

It would make sense to assume that the Johor Hominid would be a relatively intelligent and adaptable species, if it’s in any way closely related to man. It’s probably omnivorous, and, if not an active hunter, surely not averse to scavenging when the opportunity presents itself.

  6. fredfacker responds:

Reminds me too much of 2001 when the monkeys start clubbing the tapirs.

  7. jjames2 responds:

Well, fredfacker, I’ve already pointed out the similarities between Vincent’s sketch and the ape-creatures from 2001, so maybe this isn’t too much of a stretch! 🙂

  8. SheliakBob responds:

To be honest, I’ve hit the point with the entire “Johor Hominid” circus where I just throw up my hands in disgust and say “I’ll wait until I read about them in Nature or National Geographic.” In the meantime, it’s just another cryptoscam. sigh.

On the other hand, I never seem to get tired of staring at that picture of the Tropi from “Skullduggery”.
    I don’t get out much.

  9. twblack responds:

Well it would not surprise me at all that meat in some form as Boars or Livestock etc. would be part of their diet.
What would surprise me even more would be the fact that their is any TRUTH to whole Johor story. My patience is near the breaking point.

  10. shumway10973 responds:

if they are anything like what I’ve heard/read about the north american big foot, they will be a little of both. Something that size will need to eat some meat. If the boar is the only animal in the region they are able to catch and eat, only one they can stomach or whatever they will hunt it down and eat. But I will say that most of the bipedal primates I’ve read about, though they eat meat, they prefer to be alone, only becoming violent when absolutely necessary for survival. There’s no reason for the johor version of big foot to be any different, besides if they were violent for any other reason or at other times, I think we would have heard about it already.

  11. David V responds:

This is getting irretrievably stupid. Why does this website devote so much time to what is clearly becoming a sham? Now is the time for Loh and Chow to either put up or shut up. In others words, show us and the rest of the world the pics. Otherwise, stop wasting our time with fanciful drawings. Jayman had it right, its time to tune out of this subject until something more substantial turns up.

  12. kscryptoholic responds:

Yes, this Johor Bigfoot saga is beginning to get really silly. I will personally hold off on any judgement until I see some of these photos the communist rebels took of the supposed creatures. The jungle in Malaysia is a place that would be favorable for some relic species to exist. On the subject of these primates eating meat, I bet any 10 foot tall hominid would most certainly crave protein in any form it could get. Bigger brains demand a supply of protein and calories, as our omnivorous ancestors proved. In fact, availiblity of protein may be one of the reasons we enjoy large brains. Let’s hope this interesting, yet frustrating, tale of the Johor Bigfoots is more than some folks trying to build up interest in a website and book.

  13. Jeremy_Wells responds:

While I agree the sketches add nothing to the discussion of any hidden extant hominids, they are intriguing from a social science point of view and will be an invaluable resource for future generations discussing the development of legend.
If you look at it from that perspective, this is a really intriguing case.

  14. cor2879 responds:

I’d say that for the Johor Bigfoot, or any Bigfoot, to be both wildly aggressive at times and gentle at others would not be out of the question… Gorillas certainly can exhibit both extremes and so, of course, do people.
