Scimitar Felid Found In SA Tar Pit

Fossils of six scimitar cats, or Homotherium, have been found along with those of glyptodons, panthers, wolves, camels, condors, ducks and horses, all who lived together about 1.8 million years ago. Perhaps the most important find was the complete skull (above) of a scimitar felid, an animal never before discovered in South America.

National Geographic News summarized the new find of these megafauna specimens.

The remains of an ancient scimitar cat—a relative of the mighty Ice Age predator, the sabertooth—have been found lodged in a tar pit in eastern Venezuela, scientists say.

The fierce hunter was found alongside more than 33 species of ancient animals that date back 1.8 million years, to the early Pleistocene. The scimitar cat and several of the species have never before been found in South America.

Along with six scimitar cat jaws and one skull, unprecedented finds include a type of tapir; a tooth that belonged to a spider monkey; and two species of glyptodons, large armored animals related to armadillos. ~ José Orozco reporting from Caracas, Venezuela.

Ascanio Rincon (above) is the site’s lead researcher and a paleontologist at the state-run Venezuelan Scientific Research Institute. He notes the team found the specimens in 2006, but results of the analyses of the finds are just now being released.

Rincon acknowledges he has only scratched the surface, but he has already collected 5,000 specimens, including horses, llamas, crocodiles, ducks, herons, the rhino-like Mixotoxodon (above), giant ground sloths, and other glyptodons.

“The asphalt-preserved animals could rival those of Rancho La Brea,” said Christopher Shaw, collections manager at Los Angeles’s George C. Page Museum, which handles the La Brea collection.

Pampatherium

Specifically, from the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology abstract of the March 2008 paper, “Late Pleistocene Cingulates (Mammalia: Xenarthra) from Mene De Inciarte Tar Pits, Sierra De Perijá, Western Venezuela,” by Ascanio D. Rincón, Richard S. White, and H. Gregory Mcdonald, the species can be identified:

“A new assemblage of Cingulata (Xenarthra) from the late Pleistocene of northwestern Venezuela is reported. The fauna includes Dasypus sabanicola, Propraopus sulcatus, and Pampatherium humboldtii, all three of which are reported for the first time from the Venezuelan Pleistocene. Glyptodon clavipes is also reported. A systematic problem with the species of Propraopus is reported, with a suggestion for the probable inclusion of Dasypus bellus, Dasypus (Hyperoambon) kappleri, and Propraopus with its two valid species, P. punctatus and P. sulcatus, in the same genus. Hyperoambon Peters, 1865 would have seniority over Propraopus Ameghino, 1881 and would include four species, the extant D. kappleri, and the extinct D. bellus, P. punctatus, and P. sulcatus. The paleoecological aspects of the Mene de Inciarte Cingulata reflect a complex and heterogenic faunal community dominated mainly by savanna elements with some forest elements that could represent seasonally dry forest.”

Will any of these new discoveries have an impact on the debate about whether or not some glyptodons have trunks? Sclerocalyptus, a glyptodon from Argentina, might have had a trunk.

    If the scimitar cats lived along side modern animals (panthers, wolves, camels, condors, ducks and horses) who says for sure they are completely extinct now.
    Maybe glyptodons and Megatherium are still living too.
    Could a living population of Megatherium be causing all the Sasquatch sightings?
    There are some problems with this theory though EX: No tail reported in many Sasquatch sightings, and Megatherium was much bigger than Sasquatch.
    But who knows maybe it evolved. 🙂

    How could it have evolved from a sloth into an ape?

    There have been reports of megatherium still being around, but they were in much more southern reaches of South [America], in Patagonia and along the mountains to the west.

    I doubt the glyptodons are still around, being that much more of South [America] was savannah when they thrived. I would give it a better chance to some of the cats might still be living in the jungles, if any of these animals are still alive.

    must of had a huge neck, muscular thick chest… strong back …. was it stocky? (my first inclination) … could of just been burlier proportions of a lion 🙂

    I didnt mean evolve from a sloth to an ape.
    I meant it might have evolved to its environment by getting smaller (closer to Sasquatch size) and get a smaller tail.

    I doubt this theory myself because I dont think a giant sloth could be as elusive as a great ape.

    Homotherium (odd name for a cat…it means “man beast”) was actually proportioned like a hyena, with longer forelegs then hindlegs. it was also a bit more gracile then Smilodon and potentially more cursorial. It’s leaping ability may have been reduced in comparison to other cats due to the structure of it’s hind limbs.

    I always get a little sad when I read about near pre-historic animals. We missed all the good monsters.

    You make an interesting point about the animal’s morphology, Kursk. I once read a theory that saber-toothed cats died out because they were too adapted to preying upon megafauna. Once the large land mammals started dying out, the smilodons starved because they weren’t efficient at hunting smaller prey such as rabbits.

    “The asphalt-preserved animals could rival those of Rancho La Brea,…” WOW, that’s spectacular. I’ve been to the George Page museum several times, and the trove of animal remains recovered from the tar pits in that vicinity is staggering.

    I can’t help noticing how much the giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus) resembles the illustration of Pamptherium above. Maybe we didn’t necessarily miss all the good monsters. Although their numbers and fortunes are unfortunately dwindling more and more, we modern humans are the contemporaries of large, impressive terrestrial animals; like rhinos, elephants, giraffes, crocodillians, hippopotomi, bison, brown bears, big cats, large apes… even birds, like condors and ostriches. And, of course, many of us believe it’s possible that we live among other large and/or relict animals, although they may be scarce, shy, living in remote areas, and unrecognized by science.

    There were smaller ground sloths. Such could be responsible for some sightings and ethnoreports in South America. The only non-primate that makes any sense in north America would be the giant short-faced bear. And that certainly wouldn’t fit all of the sightings!

    Mylodon dung and hides found in Patagonian caves encouraged expeditions to
    find a living creature. Even Darwin speculated the Mylodon might be alive. Just
    read *1421 … by Gavin Menzies where he reports early Chinese explorers may
    have found living Mylodons.
