Update: B.C. Sasquatch Occurrence at Golden Ears Park
Posted by: John Kirk on April 26th, 2007
Awhile back, I wrote about possible footprints of a sasquatch being discovered in Golden Ears Provincial Park about an hour’s drive from Vancouver. The reaction from Cryptomundo readers was mixed. Some thought the prints were likely those of a jogger while other thought they might have been made by a sasquatch.
See the original post here on Cryptomundo at: Sasquatch Tracks in British Columbia?
Thomas Steenburg and Sebastian Wang of the joint Westcoast Sasquatch and BCSCC investigations team were able to locate the witness who took the photographs and I am sharing their findings here with Cryptomundo readers.
I will keep the name of the witness confidential, but I know who he is. Our witness was taking a walk in the park which bounds Alouette Lake, when he was approached by an elderly Italian man who was walking his dog. The Italian said that the witness ought to go up the road and take a look at the footprints left by “that baboon that Canadians are always talking about.” By that I think we can safely say that he was referring to a sasquatch. Now, if the tracks had been made by a jogger, the Italian would probably not have suggested that our witness/photographer even bother taking a look at them. There must have been something unusual about the tracks for the Italian man to have felt they needed to be looked at by our man.
Heeding this advice, our witness walked up the road to where the tracks were and was surprised to see the intervals between each track and the way they seemed to have virtually no straddle. He followed the tracks for some distance up the road and then noticed they turned left across the road and then off the road into the bush. This would have been odd behaviour for a jogger to have tracked off into the snow in the dead of winter, considering if he/she had got lost who would have known they were there? This is not the type of behaviour a jogger indulges in especially after it has been snowing.
The possibility that these tracks were left by a sasquatch was a distinctly possible one as far as our witness is concerned. Last June, our witness was hiking in the park about eight kilometers from the park entrance when he and a friend stopped to take a break. The witness was distracted by movement on a hillside and when he focused in on what was causing the movement he was surprised to see that it was a very tall hair-covered beast moving about. The hair was of a light colour and when the creature stood to its full height, the witness was shocked to see that it was between 10 and 12 feet tall.
This may seem an extreme height, but when you consider that Golden Ears Provincial Park is just kilometers from Pitt Lake where in 1965 two brothers saw a 10 –12 foot creature leaving footprints in the snow, it is not inconceivable that the witness may have seen the same creature or a similar one. The witness thought that the animal had coloration not unlike a silverback gorilla indicating advanced age.
To add even more intrigue to this sighting, I was prompted to look up any and all sightings in the Golden Ears Park area and I was led to an account that was submitted to the Oregonbigfoot.com website hosted by investigator Autumn Williams. A British Columbia teenager has alerted Autumn to his sighting of a very tall sasquatch on the hillside above Alouette Lake. He and a friend witnessed the creature and promptly shared the experience with his parents.
Through Autumn’s gracious assistance, Thomas and Sebastian were able to contact the witness and arrange an interview. The teenager’s father was present and was able to corroborate the boys’ sightings and confirm that he felt that they had told the truth about the sighting. Thomas and Sebastian felt the boy had been truthful about his experience and are of the opinion that it would be worthwhile following up by conducting a concerted search of that area.
I shall keep Cryptomundo readers alerted to what we find and will detail our results here as they come to hand.

One of the founders of the BCSCC, John Kirk has enjoyed a varied and exciting career path. Both a print and broadcast journalist, John Kirk has in recent years been at the forefront of much of the BCSCC’s expeditions, investigations and publishing. John has been particularly interested in the phenomenon of unknown aquatic cryptids around the world and is the author of In the Domain of the Lake Monsters (Key Porter Books, 1998).
In addition to his interest in freshwater cryptids, John has been keenly interested in investigating the possible existence of sasquatch and other bipedal hominids of the world, and in particular, the Yeren of China. John is also chairman of the Crypto Safari organization, which specializes in sending teams of investigators to remote parts of the world to search for animals as yet unidentified by science. John travelled with a Crypto Safari team to Cameroon and northern Republic of Congo to interview witnesses among the Baka pygmies and Bantu bushmen who have sighted a large unknown animal that bears more than a superficial resemblance to a dinosaur.
Since 1996, John Kirk has been editor and publisher of the BCSCC Quarterly which is the flagship publication of the BCSCC. An Elderly Italian man was walking his dog and he saw some large footprints in the snow. Question, how did he describe the footprints as belonging to that Big Foot creature, in broken English? I have to question this incident as doubtful.
Just because Americans generally don’t speak other languages well, don’t assume everyone doesn’t. Most Europeans speak decent english, and notice how he didn’t use the specific word for Sasquatch (An unlikely vocab word)
Sounds like a good place to look a little harder.
photos?
The only tell-tale I see in the photos is “the intervals between each track and the way they seem to have virtually no straddle.”
It’s difficult for a human to create such widely-spaced footprints on a slippery surface without distorting them, and those prints would usually be hip-width apart, not in the virtually straight line we commonly see in BF trackways.
Try it yourself on sand, dust, beach or snow, and remember to swivel your hips to keep that straight line.
In my opinion, there is not likely a major city in the United States, or Canada, that does not have the Sasquatch spirit people living inside the city limits. In small villages, they have been known to take midnight walks through town, like taxpaying citizens. There are literally hundreds of Bigfoot, within an hours drive of Portland, Oregon. From the location of the monthly International Bigfoot Society meeting, we can make contact within 15 minutes tops. So although an hours drive from Vancouver sounds impressive to the uninformed, it is not all that impressive to the handful that do know the truth.
Interesting report. A quick look at the location on Google Earth shows that just north and east is Pitt Lake and the rest of Garibaldi Park and a whole lot of wilderness. It also underscores the fact that what we consider high interior habitat is within easy walking distance to the coastal rain forest…if you’re adapted to walk great distances across mountainous terraine.
Good Morning John…
Thank you for the update on a very interesting trackway.
SilverEagle…a year ago I would have argued with you…having seen the “shadow folks” and their sign a time or two…now I’m not so sure.
There are some damned interesting blobsquatch photos on the NABF forum site…I’m amazed they are not in discussion…throughout the world of sasquatchery…JMHO
live and let live…
ole bub and the dawgs
Captiannemo,
The photos are at West Coast Sasquatch.

silvereagle- you rock!
still not really convinced by this-
so the italian guy suggests to the witness that the footprints were made by the baboonsquatch. Are we to take it from this that the italian guy saw the footprints being made by the beastie, or was that just what he guessed? Unless its the first then we can’t really use that as any kind of evidence- one persons guess (joke?) can’t be used to support our guess.
As for the stride length etc, i’ve always thought that the fact that the prints run parallel to a tire track (at least as far as can be seen from the photo) at least suggests the possibility that someone could have walked along that track (thus not leaving their own footprints) and plonked down a bf footprint every few feet.
In fact, my bet is that it is still a jogger (maybe he crossed the road to find a tree to pee behind).
However, the actual sighting report is much more interesting.
Some of the pictures on the road with the light dusting of snow might have had another track on the snow-less tire tracks… in between them, but this wouldn’t answer the question if the track way continued into the woods at the same straddle and stride or step.
Hopefully the area will be monitored more in the future. It could be something…
thats true of course rick- but are there actually any photos of the tracks crossing the road and going into the woods? or we just taking the guys word for it?
And here we are, again, track gazing.
Wonder what the sas was thinking while he watched the guy taking those photos?
Hi, I just found out about this site from a friend. I am the one who found those tracks in the snow. Thanks John Kirk for putting this on. Those tracks are not made by a jogger, the road was all ice, and minus 2. I couldn’t walk on the road only on the side. Also the park was closed for 2 months. The Italian guy spoke English, and he said he came back because his dog was scared around those tracks. The tracks were only a few hours old I would say. I have been hiking in there for 30 years, and have tracked deer, bear, and other animals, over the years, and those tracks are from none of those. I have lots of pics, and the tracks were 14 inches long and about 5 feet apart, they left the road and went into the bush. I left very fast while taking pictures, because I heard very heavy feet in the bush behind me, and knew I was been watched, and never felt like that in all my hiking days.
hiker11 – thanks for the response. Have you ever seen any other tracks in that area?
John – do you think it’s worth putting hiker11’s response as part of a new thread, as this one is now realtively old in the fast moving world of Cryptomundo, and many people could now miss it?
Hi MBFH, I have found other tracks in there, just last week I found 16 inch tracks, in the sandy creek bed, next to the creek, can some one tell me how to put pictures on here, also the same morning I was the only one in the park, and while tying my boots up, I was growled at from behind and it was deep and went right threw my body, and down the valley, and this was not a bear, I got back in my truck and almost left, If I were a sasquatch investigator, I would be in this park right away, I have told some but they dont seem to interested, I have hiked in there for 30 years, and now I notice all these new smells and other things, the sasquatch I saw last year was about 18 kl in the bush from the start of the park not 8kl, I will never hike in there alone again, or take my son in there hiking anymore.
Hi, yes I have found more tracks in there, just last week I found 16 inch tracks in the creek bed. How to put pictures on here, I have lots of pics, and that morning I was growled at from behind and it went right threw my body and down the valley. Scared me so I jumped in my truck and almost left. It was a deep growl, and not a bear, and it was meant for me. I was the first one in the park that morning, there is something going on in there and I told some investigators about my tracks and what else I have seen and heard, but they don’t seem interested enough. If I were an investigator I would be in there so fast and checking this out, I have decided to do it myself with a friend of mine. I will never hike in there alone, and wont take my son in there anymore.
