Bugs: Where Are You?

Robert Morgan has given his permission for me to share his open letter to the vanished “Coast to Coast AM” guest with the handle “Bugs.”
The Bugs story has become almost legendary in “buried Bigfoot” archives and research.
The account even gained a brief note within Art Bell’s Wikipedia entry, when the subject turns to frequent callers: “‘Bugs’ – Aging farmer who has repeatedly told of his account of shooting and burying two Bigfoot creatures back in the 1970s, in the Texas Panhandle, initially thinking they were bears. Bugs has mailed a map of the location of this ‘burial’ to Art Bell, to be released to the public upon Bugs’ death.”
The tale has become one of those frustrating stories that speeds along and then we find it deadends. Remains of Bigfoot were promised but never produced.
Morgan writes me today: “Anything you or anyone else can do to solve this conundrum would be welcome.”
Bugs, where are you?
A few years ago I appeared with you on the Art Bell Show. I was then a frequent guest on Art’s show. He had asked that I listen to your report of your encounter with the Bigfoot that had turned both violent and deadly. You and some friends purportedly had killed both a male and a female Bigfoot. I was asked to render an opinion both as a recognized authority on the subject but also as a fellow veteran familiar with the stress that can follow combat.
According to your story, you and some buddies had been out running a trap line or such and had come upon two of those entities whom I have come to call the Forest Giant People. One of your friends had opened fire for reasons of their own. As a Vietnam vet, you had learned the hard way what bullets can do to flesh. Having wounded one of the Bigfoot and having sympathy for its suffering, you followed the trail into a dense thicket. There you discovered a female tending to her mortally wounded male companion. When she attempted to defend him, you shot in self-defense. She died on the spot.
In examining their bodies, you discovered that which I have maintained for 35 years; they are not apes, they are not mere animals, but they are simply giant hairy folks who are close to us. Out of fear (and perhaps a bit of anger and shame) those bodies were quickly buried at some secret location.
However, in talking with you during Art’s show, you appeared to be suffering post-battle stress and remorse. Trust me, my friend, I understand this with all my heart. You appeared sorry for what you and your friends had done; it had come to haunt you. Again, I understand. No true warrior feels proud of killing an unarmed individual no matter the circumstance.
That SAME night on Art’s show you queried me as to why I might think these giant hominids might be more closely related to the genus Homo than that of the Pongidae, the great apes. I allowed too that if they were proven to be as I thought, just perhaps they could be included into the family of Homindae humans. Under our legal system this could perhaps lead to a charge of Second-degree murder or manslaughter. I have thought this through and discussed the matter at length with an attorney who is a part of our group. Given the circumstances, I am confident that you will not be prosecuted for any crime.
Through Art Bell you agreed to give to me a map that could lead me to where these two bodies might be buried, remember? You stated that you trusted me to protect your interest and to use the map only to further my goal of protection for these magnificent creatures. Please know that I am a man of my word and I will never break that vow to you.
It is my understanding that you had sent Art half of the map that could help to lead me to that burial site. I have asked Art if he would at least share with me what you sent plus put me into direct contact with you. He refused, good for him. He is honoring his pledge.
Now I am making a plea to you Bugs to provide the map to me. You have an opportunity to make something good come from this tragedy. Nothing can ever bring those two beings back to life. But, my friend, the map could be the first and greatest step in providing protection for these beings.
Several years have passed. I am continually asked by your fans what really happened. I hope that you see this plea and help bring this to a gratifying ending for all concerned.
Sincerely,
Robert W. Morgan
About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct).
Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015.
Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.
Along with the Minnesota Ice Man, one can only wonder why solid evidence of Bigfoot’s existence (if his claim is true) tends to fall through the cracks and dusty back files of cryptozoology.
I have heard this story a lot. I hope this makes it to “Bugs” and the map will be sent.
Just a heads up, for anyone who’s been following C2C lately, our “good friend” Todd Standing talked to Bugs on Sunday April 8th, 2007 when Art was interviewing Todd. Bugs called in if I remember correctly and Art was trying to get Bugs to converse with Todd as to the where abouts of the bodies. I haven’t heard an update yet other then a mention on one of the Ian interviews with Todd that he hasn’t gotten the information “yet”. :-/
I listened to that program in its entirety. Even if the story is true, down to the smallest detail, I am afraid that the evidence is now lost. If the grave site can be pinpointed, because of the type of soil and location, and depth of the graves, I’m afraid that time as run out for recovering the evidence needed to prove Bugs’ story.
How sad is that? Proof of existence may have been there. And because of the reluctance of Bugs to come forward initially or totally, the creatures may have died in vain anyway.
That in itself, sort of goes against the momentum of why Bugs came forward in the first place. It seems he came forward to cleanse his conscience and to prove what he said happened and that these creatures exist. He partially did that.
But to me, it was like taking your bat, getting in the ondeck circle, taking some practice swings, and then returning to the dugout without ever stepping up to the plate.
I feel both sadness and pity for all the actors in this story. I wish you luck in your request Loren. I hope that Bugs responds to the call and takes that step and stands in the batter’s box. You would make a good umpire for this situation if indeed it really happened.
I guess giving the map to Morgan would be (sightly) better than Biscardi. However, if these things are out there (alive all over the continent) then GET YOUR OWN! Leave this old guy alone and get your bloody own.
Who needs Bugs, I say. Patterson and Gimlin didn’t need him, so be a man (or woman) and get your own; Bigfoot hunters! Oh yeah, bring a LIVE one in too.
Oh, I forgot to mention that Todd Standing put out a lame (desperate sounding) appeal to Bugs the other night on the radio too…Pathetic.
I think Bugs should send the map here to Cryptomundo where Mr.Woolheater and Mr. Coleman can do what they do best!
I would LOVE to see real proof posted on this site.
These guys work hard and deserve it.
Perhaps another call in to ‘Coast to Coast AM’ might get a response. After all, “Bugs” called the show when Art hosted it maybe “Bugs” still listens.
Just a thought.
It is always funny to me how some of these stories, with NOTHING other than verbal statements to back them up get so much attention. Is it because they merely decided not to include a laughable fake picture along with their story that they suddenly have more merit. This guy felt so terribly sorry for this wounded animal that he went and shot its mate too? In this group of trappers/hunters no one thought that it might be a good idea to at least take pictures, or a piece of the carcass? Hell, even if you were scared of prosecution, if you just had the hand (or other piece) you could say you took it from a creature that you found dead. Give me a map? Give me a break.
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but didn’t “Bugs” claim to be terminally ill (due to exposure from Agent Orange) in 2001? Six years later and he’s still not dead? Am I missing something here?
Bugs is a liar, and so is Todd Standing. Why is it so hard for people to see that? I want Bigfoot to be real as much as the next guy, but there are just too many people like these two guys getting attention for talking crap. The amount of attention they get amazes me, their stories are worthless.
Todd Standing is worthless. I heard him on the C2C a few weeks ago where he had all this groundbreaking info and research. The DVD supposedly was held up in customs, however, he managed to send audio from that awful sylvanic video that came out some time ago…with the ‘beast’ behind some snow covered trees. A total joke. A total farce. A total waste of time. Thanks to guys like Todd Standing ‘squatch research will never be taken seriously. He probably plays cards with Biscardi and Moneymaker.
If you believe this story, I’ve got some beachfront property I’d like to show you…
I just love how a group of supposed investigators hobbyists or enthusiasts make so many darned assumptions about everything they discuss. This isn’t a bigfoot because everyone knows bigfoot doesn’t walk like that etc etc etc.
In this case we see assumptions about the soil make up of a place no one knows the exact location or that the guy was terminally ill in 2000 some odd date so he must be dead. The fact that soil types vary as you go deeper or even across a river or valley or under certain vegetation should kill the assumption that the evidence would have turned to dust. We must also remember that terminally ill people can live years or decades thanks to modern science. Treatments for things like aids liver and kidney disease that would mean a short life span just 10 or so years ago can now be put on hold for years or decades.
Whether or not this guy was telling the truth or even partial truth is something we may never know. I chock his story up to interesting if true but I’m not searching the Texas panhandle with ground penetrating radar nor will I start anytime soon.
His story has a distinct possibility to be true or partially true. How many hunters who are armed have reported sightings? How many haven’t reported their sightings out of fear of ridicule. I would guess that at least one hunter fired on these creatures. One home owner must have fired on some huge monster like creature terrorizing his family. So the possibility that someone one shot and killed a bigfoot creature is a possibility.
As a person who has experience in investigations and interviews, I know people often add details to the reports. They do so out of feeling they need to impress the interviewer that they know what they are talking about or saw.
So could bugs have taken a shot at a bigfoot, yes. Could he have killed one, yes. Could he have then buried the creature, yes. Could agent orange have fried his brain cells to the point he thinks his wife is queen of the sasquatch and he has shacked up with her to atone for his murderous rampage and deaths of her royal court, yes.
Bottom line is anything could be true. I have spent years trying to get the truth out of those wanting to lie to me. I can usually tell when someone is lying about something. Then again I could be suffering from delusions of grandeur and be full of bigfoot feces.
None of what anyone says on this subject is of any real importance to us as those who endeavor to find or learn the truth of sasquatch till bugs says X marks the spot and a body is dug up.
“Bugs” is Ed Hale, host of Plains Radio Network, a political blogtalk radio show.
